Shading is actually quite simple, pick a light source, say, upper right corner, then everything that would be on the opposite side of that light source would be darker than everything on the side of the light source. Round objects are a bit tricky, like legs and tails and whatnot, but it's not really that hard. Your shading technique is good, it actually looks proper, so once you get the whole shape/shading thing, you'll be good to go.

Since they're outside in the daylight(?), the light source probably wouldn't be obvious. Think "giant overhead lightbulb" lol. Go outside and observe yourself or other people in the daylight, and look at where the shadows fall, and it will make a big difference :D
