Day 1
CHN (0-1) - 15 16 14 12 - 57
JPN (1-0) - 22 22 25 31 - 100
In the opening game of the IFBA's first World Tourney, the Chinese team had a small contingency of fans. However, Japan's fans were certainly more organized and boisterous, with an oendan all the way from Tokyo chanting and singing songs throughout the game. It no doubt inspired the Japanese team as they led by 13 at the half and only turned on the heat, winning by 43 points when it was all over. When China was competitive, Redawn Fenwatcher directed the offense, scoring 10 of China's 31 points in the half and finishing with 15 points. However, Team Japan was on fire the entire game and when turnovers plagued China in the second half (they finished with 18), Japan took full advantage. All of Japan's starters finished in double figures with Ren Inoue and Shirley Takamoto leading the charge with 21 points each. Fenwatcher also had five assists and Todd Hu dominated the boards for them with a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Japan center Kenta Yamashita also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Much of the second half was spent with Japan's bench supplementing Inoue and Takamoto. Keitaro Kurosaki put up 10 points and Tadashi Gotokuji and Minoru Sakai both put their stamp on the game with 8 points each. One bright spot for China's overmatched bench play was Eva Wong proving to be a capable backup for Fenwatcher, dealing out six assists on China's scarce buckets.
Team Japan was spirited and expressive, with Shirley getting a few samba moves in while Gotokuji and Sakai engaged in spirited high-five exchanges. China of course, seemed demoralized, but coach Tian Zhang tried to keep their morale up, as he reportedly reminded his young team this was only the first game.
AUS (1-0) - 24 17 20 28 - 89
RUS (0-1) - 22 28 19 16 - 85
The reputation of the high-flying Australians didn't disappoint as Ryan Malone and Alan Murphy both had highlight-reel worthy dunks in the first five minutes of the game alone. However, Russia was able to keep pace with them in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Kasa Yalenchka exploded for 12 points and Sasha Ivanovich showed her reputation for lockdown defense, getting critical steals and even a tough block on Barnaby Jazz. The Russians went up by 7 at the half. They managed to keep pace in the third quarter. In the final frame, it seemed that Australia said enough was enough surged themselves. Aisha Melbourne took charge in the middle and became the go-to for the Aussies, scoring the go-ahead bucket with five seconds to go. On the ensuing inbounds, Alan Murphy intercepted an inbounds from Yalenchka and was quickly fouled. He nailed both free throws to put Australia up 89-85. The Russians tried a three pointer with Iver Drake at the end, but it bounced off the back of the rim harmlessly. For Australia, Malone led the team with 20 points and Barnaby Jazz had 10. Kyle McLeod had 8 assists and Melbourne had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Yalenchka led Russia with 18 points and 6 assists. Timur Tomlin had 9 rebounds.
GER (1-0) - 24 26 24 22 - 96
CAN (0-1) - 20 13 29 24 - 86
Canada had high expectations with the veteran squad they entered into the tournament and Germany had something to prove. Both showed it quickly when the teams sprinted out with dueling buckets in the first quarter. However, the second quarter was the Siegfried show as the giant white lion almost singlehandedly kept Canada off the board, scoring four blocks in the quarter alone. He also poured in 12 of Germany's 26 points in the frame as they built up a 17-point lead by the half. To their credit, Canada came back as much as they could, with Rocky Caracal scoring 12 points in the third. But the deficit was just too much as Klaus Korber made sure to keep Germany ahead by pacing them in the frame with timely buckets. Canada ended the game with a nice shot by Francois Martineau, but it wasn't nearly enough as the horn sounded and a lot of Canadian fans uttered a groan of disappointment.
Rocky led the Canadians with 18 points and Charles Yotechuk and Bobby Baylor had 12 points each. Yves Carbonneau led the team with 6 assists and Bobby Baylor had 8 rebounds to lead the team. Siegfried Romanoren, though, was the huge star with 24 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks. Klaus Korber had 8 assists and Heike Andersflugel, making an anticipated appearance, managed to surprise with 10 points.
GBR (0-1) - 27 24 20 19 - 90
USA (1-0) - 19 29 21 22 - 91
The crowd was red, white and blue, no matter what country you were rooting for. And chants of "USA! USA!" dominated the atmosphere. But to start they were quieter than usual as Team Britain stormed out of the gate thanks to FBA Rookie of the Year Jake Turner. The tall fox took advantage of a slow start by Adam Tevela and Zack Tate to dominate inside and lead Team UK to an eight-point lead. Team USA did a little storming back of their own with their balanced attack: Valencia Zeraus fed the ball inside to Tate to get the center going offensively while Crystal Davis came off the bench and hit a couple of wide-open three pointers. But at the half, Team UK was still up by three. The two teams traded the lead throughout the third quarter, but Team UK still retained the lead with two points. The fourth quarter proved to be like the rest as neither side refused to give an inch. Buck Hopper and Ambrose Slade both made sure of that with strong performances showing their veteran natures. So it all came to the final seconds, with Team UK nursing a 90-89 lead with just five seconds left to go.
"Fans are on their feet... USA with a shooter lineup in: Zeraus, Hopper, Davis, Conkale and Mack. UK has Slade, MacQuilkin, Norwich, Turner and Durby. Davis to inbound, Roosevelt and Newell gesturing at the sidelines. Davis gets it in to Zeraus, four seconds. She stares down Norwich. Two seconds, fadeaway... IT'S GOOD!! Valencia Zeraus with the winner and Team USA pulls out a close one!!" The five American players joined in a celebratory impromptu group hug and hop.
Lemond Conkale led Team USA with 20 points and Zeraus and Hopper had 14. Zeraus tallied 7 assists and Tate led with 12 rebounds. Turner scored a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Slade added in 15 points and 6 assists. Durby led Team Britain with 12 rebounds.
