Here are some of my notes on my experience and tips on painting amiibos. This was my first time trying this so I chose an "easy" amiibo to paint, which was yoshi.
-The 3 paintbrushes, palette, and acrylics cost around $20 USD total
-Total painting time took approximately six hours
-I chose a matte finish acrylic paint to match the original Yoshi Amiibo texture
-Acrylic paint is very thick, and must be mixed with some water before applying otherwise you'll get ugly bumpy brush stroke texture. This also means the paint will be thinner and less opaque, so multiple coats may be needed.
-The eyes, neck, and palms of the hands were a total bitch to paint because of the extremely cramped and tiny spaces. I used a 00 brush for those areas, with the smallest dab of paint for maximum control.
-Unlike the black paint, the red and white acrylics were very transparent, and required many more coats to make a smooth color consistency.
-The shoes were made of a different material than the rest of the amiibo, and was very bad at holding the paint, as a result, I ended up getting a lot of lumpy textures when applying the multiple coats of white.
-All in all, this was a fun little project to do, and I am reasonably happy with the results. If I were to do this again, I would painted the lighter colors on first, then the black color, as it is easier to cover up the mistakes of the white and red paint than it is to cover up the mistakes of the black paint.
