Finally! I found this lake by accident, taking a zig switchback, when I should have zagged. The road forked twice, I took the left one, thinking it'd take me around the back of the lake, like last time, a year and a half ago. But no! I was surprised when I came up onto the ridge above Katherine Lake, finally seeing the elusive water body with non-Google eyes! It's huge, this is only a fraction of the total size. I got up there at 5:30pm, two hours before sunset, and I was already six hours into the valley! By the time I got to an hour from the gate, it was pitch black.

Thus far, I've only managed to get massive blisters, scrapes & gashes, and thorns embedded in me. But on the last solo adventure, I lost my machete scabbard while traversing through dense brush, and the blade kept bashing against my calves. Scars make one beautiful, right?
Yeah, I've almost cut myself with a misswipe and getting tired/careless before I lost it. It was a really outstanding blade, too, considering it only cost me $14. I've never been able to find something comparible since and have been debating going with a Tibetan import, but don't know if it's worth the hype. What kind of blade do you use?
Hah, I used to work at a hardware store, so I got a discount on a Gerber Gator Jr. I have small hands, and this one is easy for me to hang onto and use. I've had to sharpen the blade with a sharpening stone, because the ferns and berry bushes seem to be made of blade-dulling material.
