Sorry for the wait, I really struggle to make the story consistent, so it takes a while to make the chapters up^^ And I should struggle with the next one as well^^ Anyway, I wish you a good reading, I hope you like it =3
Amaria groaned as she woke up the next morning. She had been crying the whole previous day in her hidden corner, and she didn’t have any more tear to drop. She felt so empty…
In order to remain loyal to the role she played with her amnesic lover, she had come to his place to inspire him a bit of fear. To justify her presence in the city and the interest she had for him, she had told him that he was hers and that they had faked being friends so other humans wouldn’t suspect her to be the true monster she was. She would have loved to give him the truth, but his state was delicate and she was afraid to lose him for good…
He had forgotten all their time together, and even more. To him, she was only a regular dragoness… If she had told him the truth, he could have repeated it to another human and endangered the two of them… Now, at least, he was in no danger… He probably hated her as much as he was scared of her, but he was safe. And the pain of losing him as a lover was softened by her dedication to watch after him. In a certain way, they were still close…
However, while she just intended to scare him a bit to refresh his dedication to silence, she had gone too far… Pushing her role, her instincts had struck while she was off guard. And listening to nothing but her needs and desires, she had eaten him, like in the good old days… except he wasn’t willing this time.
She had felt awful… She felt like her true nature had been revealed: a selfish dragoness who didn’t even hesitate to hurt her beloved one if it allowed her some pleasure… She might have forgiven herself with another human, since she hadn’t physically hurt him. But with him, she would never forgive any misbehavior…
He was her beloved human, no matter what memories were left in his damaged mind… which was damaged because of her, what’s more! She hadn’t been able to protect him against the strange creature that attacked him!
All these depressed her… After a lovely year spent together, she was alone now… Everything was her fault, and everything got worse every day. She even started to think… that he would be better off without her...
To get her mind a bit less tormented, she decided to go at Bolner’s place like usual this morning. To keep making sure she didn’t attract human’s animosity, she gave some of her venom to the head of the city, who made sure it was well-employed. With it, many humans had cured from diseases and injuries they couldn’t heal before. And it had made her quite popular. Most citizens still preferred to stay away from her, but at least they appeared friendlier.
In a way, it made her feel a bit better about herself. She helped these people. It meant she still had a good side, at least.
She didn’t know where Bolner lived. But as the most important one in this city, the huge human could always be found in the most imposing building of the city by day. She had taken the habit to come at a precise moment of the morning, so she would be sure to not surprise him. She kind of trusted him, but surprised humans could be… unpredictable.
The woman who regulated the entrance of the building smiled at her. She had shown some distrust in the beginning, but as the days went on, she became more and more welcoming.
“Good morning Amaria.” She greeted her. “You came to see Bolner again?”
“Do I ever come for anything else?” She asked back, forcing her smile though she intended her words to be a bit aggressive. She wasn’t in mood for nice talk today.
“Indeed.” She giggled. “He’s in his office, like usual.”
Amaria thanked the lady, though she didn’t mean it. The young dragoness was somehow relieved that the human female didn’t catch her bad mood. It would have attracted some suspicion. But maybe humans were as bad at reading dragons’ facial expression as dragons were with humans’.
She arrived at the door of Bolner’s office and used her paw to knock at the door. The head of the city himself had taught her that, telling her that humans felt better if she did so before entering somewhere. She didn’t mind announcing herself; it made sense to her that humans preferred not having a dragoness barging in without any warning.
She heard the huge human’s voice inviting her to enter, and so she did. He was sat on his chair, but curiously, there were no documents on his desk like there always was. Maybe he didn’t have anything to take care of, today.
“Ah, Amaria.” He welcomed her with a warm smile. “I was worried. You didn’t show up yesterday.”
“I had a bad day and I wanted to stay alone for a bit.” She replied with honesty.
“Of course. I wasn’t questioning your good will.” He carefully replied, like he sensed her tension. “As I said, I was just worried for you. What happened? Can I help?”
She looked at him without speaking a word for a second or two. She even considered speaking the truth to him… but this was none of his business, and it would be hard to explain to him since he didn’t know what she had told her lover. And he didn’t know that they were lovers in the first place!
“This is nothing… Or at least, nothing you can solve like you solve the problems of this city. Thanks for your good will, but I just want to give you my venom and go.”
He made a strange ‘hum’, and stood up. He walked around his desk with a weird attitude, like he was lost in his thoughts.
“You know, I can only imagine how you feel among humans.” He said when he finally looked at her. “You feel like you’re just tolerated here. You feel like you don’t belong to here. You feel alone and maybe even a bit scared. But to me, you’re no different from any other citizen. So if I can help you in any way, your problems will not be less important than any other.”
Bolner never ceased to surprise her… It was like he read her feeling like in an open book, like humans said. And his words actually reached her. But it would be too complicated to involve him in this… After all, despite his friendly appearance, she still wasn’t sure she could fully trust him.
“That’s really nice of you, but you couldn’t understand. It’s really complicated.” She tried to refuse politely.
“I beg to differ…” He said with a strange grin, crossing his arms. “I think I know what the problem is, and I’m already working on it.”
She was about to ask what he thought he had understood, but at this moment, the door behind her opened. It was him. Her human.
“What is he doing here?” She asked while the newcomer asked the same about her, in a perfect synchronicity.
“Please come in.” Bolner invited him, ignoring the two questions.
The young amnesic man seemed to hesitate, but he probably didn’t want to refuse Bolner’s hospitality. He walked toward the desk to face the head of the city, keeping an eye on Amaria all along. He didn't seem scared… She knew when he was angry, and he seemed incredibly mad at her. The dragoness couldn’t blame him for that.
“Amaria came here, like every morning at this hour, to give me her venom which is currently used to cure everyone of this city from minor injuries to terminal phases of unknown disease.” Bolner explained to the young man. “She missed our meeting yesterday and I was a bit worried she wouldn’t show up today, but she apparently made it.”
A rush of stress invaded her when the young man glanced at her. He knew where she was at this hour the previous day, and he had probably not lived it like the lovely breakfast she experienced… She might have big problems if he forgot his fear and just revealed it to Bolner in a moment of pure anger…
“Then why did you ask me to come at this exact hour?” He asked as he eyed angrily on the dragoness. Apparently, he still didn’t like to involve others in his problems, amnesia or not…
“Isn’t that obvious?” The head of the city replied. And in front of the confusion of his two guests, he kept talking. “You know, when I woke up from my coma, a bit more than a year before, the first thing I’ve been told was that I owed it to a dragon and to a citizen whom I had never heard about. And I remembered I thought the world had gone crazy while I was out. A friendly dragon in the city? All because of a man who had managed to tame the world’s most dangerous creature? It was so unbelievable that I demanded to meet them both. And the first time I saw you, I understood everything. You, young man.” He said pointing to Amaria’s lover, then at her. “You haven’t tamed her, you befriended her. I swear that I thought you even looked cute together, back then. What happened a year ago was a tragedy to me, because I felt like I had lost the two most promising pair this world ever carried. I saw a new hope in you. I thought you’d change the world. I thought you’d make it a better place to live. And then POOF!” He said, opening his hands wide, probably to symbolize the explosion. “You were both gone… One dead, and one who would probably never return. When I saw Amaria bringing you back, I thought it was a miracle. I felt like the new hope had reborn. And then what?! One little amnesia and you both avoid each other!”
“How do you know that?!” Amaria asked, outraged. “Have you spied on us?!”
“I am the head of the city!” Bolner simply replied with a tough look. “I would be foolish to not have eyes and ears everywhere! And I would be a bad leader if I didn’t care about my fellows’ lives. Especially you two!”
Amaria instantly calmed down. This human wasn’t a leader for no reason; He could inspire respect with his only attitude, even to the young dragoness... His story had only managed to make her feel bad about herself. His words made her sound like she had given up so easily… But things were more complicated than he let them seem… She wondered what effect it had on her lover. He seemed a bit confused, but he still frowned, which wasn’t a good sign. He had only heard this story through the fake version she had given him.
Maybe she hadn’t chosen her way wisely; maybe there was another way… and she wondered if there was a way back from this…
“I think you don’t know everything, sir.” Her human spoke, raising her stress level. Was he about to tell something wrong?! “Things are not always what they seem.”
“Yes, not always, but they sometimes are.” Bolner replied calmly. “I can get that you distrust her, because you have no memories of this time. But Amaria has always been by your side, you two were inseparable! You fear her now, but I remember when I was watching you, back then. I used to tell myself that I would be extremely lucky if I found someone who made me as happy as you two were!”
Was Bolner aware of anything? His words sounded like he knew that they used to be more than just friends…
“What proof do you have that you haven’t misunderstood the situation? What if she wasn’t that trustable?”
Amaria didn’t dare to speak a word. She clearly heard all his hidden messages, and Bolner would have easily gotten them too if he suspected her to have lied to him. The situation made her incredibly nervous, and at the same time, her heart was like ripped of her chest.
Her human talked about her like she wasn’t there. And he said things that would have been provocative, if she was actually what she pretended to be with him… He had to be awfully mad at her…
“Young man, let me tell you simple facts.” Bolner said with authority, raising a finger. “Since Amaria has come back here with you, all the tribes around the city overwhelm me with proposal of peace. They are scared of her, and it could be sparing hundreds of people’s lives in a near future. The ambiance of the city has changed too. People are less morose, more smiling. They are not worried anymore for their close ones, because Amaria generously gives us her venom. People love her more every day. And all she asks in return is to be fed and be left alone. And you know why? Because her only wish is to stay there for you! Ask yourself the right questions, instead of assuming what seems to be your truth!”
Her lover seemed shocked. Amaria could almost hear him weighting his anger toward her and these facts that contradicted everything he assumed. She was stressed he could ask for explanations, but then, Bolner pointed his accusative finger at her.
“And you, young lady, whether you are a dragon or not, I also have my load of accusations! I know how you have been behaving too!” He said with a frown. “You have been avoiding him, and even scaring him. I saw how you played tough when he looked at you. Do you know what I tell little boys when I see them continuously bullying the same little girl? Stop trying to get her attention like this and simply speak to her!”
Now she understood how her human probably felt. She felt so little in front of this human… And yet, she was bigger than he was. And still… his words sounded like he knew everything about their former relationship…
“He needs you, stupid scaly head!” He scolded her. “He needs you and you avoid him! I thought nothing could break your friendship, but at the first difficult, you give up! So listen to me, both of you! You better get your mind straight, because I’m not going to let you destroy what you built together!”
For a moment, silence reigned in the room. Amaria felt horribly bad… And judging by the face of her human, he felt deeply disturbed. Hearing that the merciless dragoness who had savagely barged in his place to eat him was actually a good friend had to be hard to believe… The young dragoness silently hoped that he would see things differently and get back to her. But with all that she felt guilty for, she only wanted him back if it was his personal choice. And she would not force it.
Without speaking a word, her human turned back and walked toward the door.
“Wait!” Bolner called him. “I’m not done with you!”
But he only stopped in front of the door, not caring about turning his body to face the head of the city.
“I’m done with you for today.” He replied coldly. “I don’t know what’s going on here, but I’m going to find out, be assured of it.”
With these words, he got out and slammed the door behind him, leaving Bolner and Amaria alone. The head of the city sighed.
“What a stubborn… I wouldn’t have thought he would be that hard to convince…”
The young dragoness didn’t want him to spoil everything. If the head of the city discovered what she had told her human, he would start questioning her motives… Why would she lie to him about something everyone knew about? Surely he would come to the conclusion that she hid something. And he had to keep ignoring how she used to live with her lover! She wasn’t sure he ignored it… but the risk wasn’t worth it.
“Hmm… About my venom?” She suggested shyly.
“No venom today.” He simply replied, before looking at her. “We don’t have any urgency to cure right now, except you. Amaria, whatever is going on between you two, please try to fix it. If I wanted to keep seeing tragedies, I wouldn’t have dropped my warrior life. I’d like the people of my city to be happy… I’d like you two to be happy. Like you used to be. Go to him.”
“But you saw him.” She argued. “You saw he’s not ready for it, he needs time…”
“I said: go to him.” He repeated. “Amaria, the more you hide, the more you run away, and the more it will get difficult. We all need to face the truth sooner or later. And he needs you by his side. You’re the best friend he has, maybe the only one he ever had, and probably the only one who can help him remembering who he is.”
Amaria lowered her head in shame. Playing tough with her human in order to not torment him with the truth seemed like a good choice back then, but Bolner’s words made her reconsider her assumptions… It seemed like having a friend by his side would have helped him more than trying to ensure his safety, especially since people of this city actually accepted her.
“I’m sorry… for all of this…” She sincerely apologized.
“Don’t tell me, tell him!” He said. “He’s the one who’s lost and needs explanations. And only you can give him these explanations.”
He was right. She still could fix that. She would have to be convincing, but she could bring him back! She bowed in respect to this wise human, and run toward the exit. She got out just in time to see her lover turning left at the end of the hall, she had to reach him! She ran as fast as she could, and shouted at him just as he was about to get out of the building:
“HUMAN!”
He turned around to face her with curiosity, but still with that awful frown. And her throat squeezed so much that she couldn’t speak a word. She realized she didn’t know what to say to him! While she struggled to gather her mind, trying to find the right way to convince him she wasn’t the monster she looked like despite the evidences, something got her attention.
A human, face hidden under a hood, was running toward her lover. A shiny reflection instantly attracted her sight on the blade he held, ready to strike. Listening to nothing but her instincts, she dashed to the unaware target. Time was like suspended; she saw the aggressor approaching him and she wasn’t sure to make it in time… He raised his sword… started to lower it…
“NO!” She screamed with all the strength of her lungs.
The impact felt like an explosion. Her fear had made her quicker than she thought she could be, and she pushed her lover away while she hit the nasty guy with her other paw. The blade followed its course, but fortunately, all it encountered was her horns. The aggressor rolled on the ground, but her only concern was her human, who had been projected against the wall by the mighty push of a scared dragoness.
“Are you okay?!” She asked him, holding his head with a paw.
He looked dizzy, but he was still conscious. He first eyed on the paw that touched his cheek, then on the hooded human on the ground. He hesitated, then pushed her paw away with an angry yet uneasy rejection:
“Get off me, you filthy reptile!”
Deeply hurt by his words, Amaria didn’t resist and stepped back. She couldn’t even blame him for such rejection: he hated her despite her gesture, because of how she had treated him so far… Fortunately, another voice distracted her from this awkward situation:
“What’s going on here?!”
Both of them looked at Bolner who ran toward them, probably alerted by the noises of the attack. He was accompanied by an armed human, probably a guard.
“It’s okay.” Amaria reassured him. “He was attacked by…”
But she didn’t end her sentence. As she turned her head to point at the aggressor, she saw it, too late… He had gotten up on his feet and was about to stab her lover from behind. This time she knew she couldn’t react fast enough… She already pictured the sword piercing through the chest of her beloved human…
She didn’t quite understand what happened next… Like he felt the attack coming, her human stepped aside, the blade sliding in the slight yet empty space between his chest and his left arm. He blocked the hands of the aggressor, then pushed with his whole body, projecting the nasty man toward the wall. Quickly, like a reflex, he grabbed the sword and applied the sharp side on the throat of the defeated man to immobilize him.
“Who are you?! And why are you trying to kill me?!” He shouted.
Under his hood, all what Amaria could see of the aggressor were his teeth clenched in rage. Like it answered the question, he grabbed his clothe and revealed his face.
And the young dragoness held back a gasp… Indeed, it answered the question… He was one of the human faces she could never forget, for he had tormented them nearly as much as his father… It was the son of Mr. Devon… For her human though, it didn’t explain anything… Of course, since he had forgotten everything…
“Don’t you recognize me?!” The defeated kid shouted angrily, furious to face an empty stare. “Because of you, my father doesn’t even have a name on his grave! You killed him! And you made everyone believe his corpse was yours!”
So that was what happened that day… Her human had never spoken about it, not once in a whole year… The burnt body she had seen that night… was Mr. Devon’s… That explained a lot. And though she hated him and his son, she couldn’t help but understanding the rage of this young human…
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Her human screamed back.
“LIAR!”
“ENOUGH!” Bolner intervened. “Guard, seize him. I’ll interrogate him later. And you, how are you?”
“Fine, I guess…” the young man replied, watching his arms while the guard captured the troublemaker.
For the first time since the beginning of the attack, he seemed confused, like he struggled to believe what just happened now that the danger was away. But to Amaria, it actually looked like a sign of hope. In his former life, he was a warrior. And the way he had defeated this kid meant that deep inside, this former life still existed. Not everything was lost.
“I’m not done with you!” The aggressor shouted as he was taken away. “I’ll kill you! You hear me?! I’ll kill you!”
“I’m sorry for that, my friends…” Bolner dropped. “This kid has been really tormented since the death of his father… He hasn’t spoken a word in a year, always alone, always discrete… I should have seen that coming, but I kind of forgot him… like everyone else, I guess…”
“Yeah… Make sure he doesn’t do that again, next time I won’t spare him.” The young man said coldly, before turning back and getting out of the building hastily, slamming this door as well.
This, on the other hand, wasn’t like him… He used to pity everyone, even those who didn’t deserve it. He even sometimes pitied Mr. Devon, despite all the horrible traps he set to take both of them down. And now he showed no mercy, and threatened to kill a kid. Was it still him? It was hard to tell for now…
“I’m really sorry for that, Amaria… I guess he’s more lost than I thought…” Bolner commented.
“He used to be so nice, I struggle to recognize him now…” She replied, eyes fixed on the door, feeling guilt drowning her heart. All this was her fault… She had made this knew human with the fear she had inspired him…
“Don’t worry, you’ll get another opportunity to speak to him.” Bolner said, putting his big hand on her shoulder. A contact she didn’t like, but that she didn’t dare to reject. “Tomorrow night, there will be the great yearly celebration, the whole city will gather to share a huge dinner, and you’re invited.”
Amaria looked up at him and faked a shy smile. She knew he intended well, but at this point, she was starting to lose hope. The more she stayed around, the more he got away from her…
And she doubted that any kind of human party could fix this…
Amaria groaned as she woke up the next morning. She had been crying the whole previous day in her hidden corner, and she didn’t have any more tear to drop. She felt so empty…
