I go through a lot of bristol board for work every month. I buy pads, and cut off a strip from the side to make it "regulation" size. This leaves me with a large number of 3 x 17" strips. I don't throw them away because they have a lot of uses. For one thing, I doodle on them...

A lot of the bristol put out specifically for comics is 'pre-ruled,' with blue lines that you're supposed to use for panel guides. I don't use that because I tend to use a lot of odd panel layouts in my comics, which makes anything pre-ruled redundant and a distraction. Bristol usually comes in 14 x 17, which is probably the size Mike is using. I used to use that exclusively, but now there's pads that are 11 x 17, which is the size I do my comics in, so now i usually use those. They also come in 'smooth' and 'rough' finish (plate & vellum); I use vellum, which is rougher and can take the pencil better without smearing everywhere.
