Probably yes.

These three heads were all quick (<5 minutes) sketches done over the same gesture template (the yellow lines on the left). Tried them all different ways--holding the pen certain ways, making lines faster or slower, trying to aim for something more toony or more realistic, etc. By far I prefer the one on the far right, mostly because of the shape of the head and the thickness of the neck--but there's elements of the other two I'd rather work into it as well. Either way, just more practice. 20 minutes of actual work with 3-4 hours of mental preparation staring at a screen. If someone has suggestions on how to improve that practice feel free to leave them here.
