This is a personal tradition I have celebrated year after year, Autumn is my birth season and the first day is considered a holiday between a few friends and I.

My tradition is as follows...
On the first day of Autumn, purchase a pumpkin (the size is personal preference), a roll of red ribbon (or as close to the color red you can find) and a candle (unscented, white). During the afternoon while the sun is setting, tie the ribbon (cut a reasonable length) around the pumpkin (a standard knot will do), and set the candle close by in front of the pumpkin, light the candle.

The pumpkin serves as an icon for the season and in this case promotes good harvest (the pumpkin stays as decoration from this point on), the ribbon promotes good health (hence red or as close to the color as you can get) and the candle represents our soul (the candle is to be left lit until it goes out on its own). This can be done in the evening as well but as long as its before midnight. The candle may be lit again every passing evening from this point on until Autumn ends but its not neccecary).
