HxH and Shaman King are my ironclad top two mangas ever in existence. And I couldn't say which one I love more. Hunter x Hunter has depth and actual spectrums of character rather than just various archetypes.

but yeah!!! HxH means a LOT to me like... i masswatched it in like, 2 weeks last year, didn't think much? then over the year my love for it and gon just grew tremendously and i've been rewatching it recently... as well as making my way thru hxh 99

Oooh~ :O Hrm...Lyserg might be fun for you to draw. He's got some revenge vibe and depth that makes me think of Kurapica. And then Tao Ren definitely becomes someone quite interesting. In both art design and generally the way it was put forward but not super commercialized...I like to think of Shaman King as like if One Piece never became the overpopularized, overdone demon popu-manga that it is today. It just feels good, and clean.

I don't like to overadvertise Shaman King, because I've found that my tastes tend to be particular to me...But there's a lot of depth there imo, and there's something sort of magical about watching the maturation of the characters, similar to when you're watching Gon and Killua and the way they grow from becoming Hunters, to dealing with family life, to dealing with friends' life, to learning Nen, to learning what it means to fight for your life, etc. Definitely not all seriousness either, lots of gag, which I'm a fan of...Though not at all overbearing to the point where the manga becomes a gag manga. It gets quiiite serious. :P

The major differences, I think, in terms of how they go about maturation...Is probably that Gon's growing-up phases are something that you see happen yourself. When you start to read through what the main character is like for Shaman King...it's more that he's experienced a loooot already. And the character that you see before you is the product at the end of the day. I mean, he still has growing-up moments, PLENTY of them, but...idk.

...I like both of these manga a lot, they're my favorites for a reason, bluh, I need to stop geeking. = 3=

I can't 100% say that if you love HxH, you'll love SK...But I will say that SK has a, pardon the puns, "soul" that a lot of mangas can't really capture anymore.

I've been told about Lyserg actually! the friend who got me to start said he'd be my favourite.. and also compared him to kurapika, so. i'm enjoying it so far though!!! i do love Yoh... and Ren. And don't apologise for the puns!!! i used to love dubbed digimon as a kid... masses of puns are my life energy, honestly.

but that's quite an interesting way to phrase it!! that's.. probably definitely why Gon as a character appeals to me so much, but i'm not too fussed if some of the development is already 'there' like in Yoh's case. I'm excited to get further into the manga though...!!! it really appeals to me so far and i hope that can continue aah!!!

You know how like sometimes, it feels like when you see a character suddenly get a huge random background just to make them relevant to what's going on? Like the writer was just like "Eh, we need to just make him do this so people can relate or whatever"?

The things that get revealed about characters in the story are always based from the most interesting point: When someone has seen spirits, understood what death is, and been a part of death from a young age...What sort of person do you become. You get people who are vengeful, you get people who try to find better dreams in life, you get people who just want to smile and make other people smile, you get people who try to chase impossible dreams, you get people who try to chase stupid dreams, etc.

And the metaphor and sort of hidden message becomes...that shaman are normal people.

And the development of those normal people...is what's fun.

I'll stop geeking out for now, I'll see if I can throw 10 bucks or so at you for some experimental paints some other time or maybe even after I wake up from...probably what's only going to be three or four hours of sleep before my midnight shift. -w-
