This is the longest work I've ever done. Took me oodles of tries to get it uploaded to FA. (504'd a ton) I think it took 20+ hours.. I never really keep track. The last bit gets a little messy, but I'm happy enough with how it turned out so I don't feel like fixing it. :x I cheated on the arpeggios in the credits music. It was too difficult to play at full speed so I recorded it half-speed and sped it up via software.

No I never did. I've beaten few NES games without using an emulator's save states. Other than 1-game sports games, I think the only games I've gone through were Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and Friday the 13th. Frankly, you usually have to commit a whole day to it, and I don't usually stay interested for that long. Not to say I'm a Playstation, Xbox guy. I'm all about NES and above all else, SNES.
To be fair, I play some pretty evil NES games. Like Ninja Gaiden. I could probably eventually do that without using save states, but why would I want to? That game eventually stops being fun, and starts being all business. Although I really don't like to use save states, so I don't use one in the middle of a level. Only at the beginning, and I don't start using them until late in the game when there's a hawk above every crevasse.
I've come close to beating Super C with no cheats. I can get to the last stage but then it kicks my ass. I can usually get to level 5 without being touched, but then...no, just no.
I'm rambling...

Oh man, Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 are probably some of the hardest games I've beaten. You're right, the games just become a chore near the end.
I couldn't beat Ninja Gaiden 3 because there wasn't and unlimited amount of continues. ; ; Stage 3 (or whatever that swampy level is) would just kick my sorry ass.

With save states used, my sister and I set out to beat it a little while ago. We had to stop before I had to make good on my computer's warranty too soon.
I did do it with the save states before but it was tainted.
I need to get better at the original Contra. If my icon is any indication, those are my favorite games on NES.

Ahhh, when it breaks into the main Area 1 tune it's like a fresh breath of nostalgia. VERY well done! You should play for a convention in the gameroom or something. =3
Area 2... I can just see the little bastard worm bots trying to sneak in and hit me.
So did you have fun with this soundtrack? =3

Oh dear God yes! This is one of my all time favorite, possibly my top all time favorite, NES game. And you did marvelously with the music! The guitar work made the old tunes come to life, and my hat is most definitely off to you on that!
As far as old NES games that were brutally hard, I'll definitely jump on the band wagon regarding the Ninja Gaiden games, but another to put in that box would be Ghosts and Goblins. I can't even reach the final level without save states to help me get through a few particularly brutal stages.
