This is my character in a Shadowrun game we've been playing for a few months. I have been slow to finish the drawing since I didn't like the original concept. I used a photo as reference on this, to get her looking as human as possible and not cartoony like my other stuff.
Shadowrun is © to WizKids.
Here is the story that was written to follow her past....

Real Name: Mei Roth
SR Name: Xiao-fen
Age: 33
Ethnic: Chinese
<begin diary entry>
I was adopted by a couple when I was 3 years old. I don't know who my real parents are, although, I think somewhere inside, I would like to know. It's been 30 years at least since they have seen me.
I grew up with my dads in a middle class area of town. Made it through high school, graduated at 18. The usual stuff. After high school I went on to the community college. I was trying to major in criminal justice. Dad's dad was a cop, and I thought it'd be neat, that and I've always had a knack for finding things. So to school with me. In my second year I got an internship at the local paper. They had me reporting the stories from the police, the briefs. Occasionally I was given bigger assignments, like reporting thefts, missing people, missing items, other crimes. Usually I was taking the photos while the more skilled reporter wrote the story, but that was ok. Some of the photos I took were fantastic and award worthy. Learned a lot about cameras and photography.
I completed 2 years and received an associate's degree. Summer break, I continued the internship. That was until the editor dropped it. I guess my knack for finding things while I was younger may have had to do with magic, but it didn't fully manifest until I was 20. The editor wasn't happy about it. He refused to keep me on. He was afraid I'd manipulate the minds of the people and not report the absolute truth. Stupid sod. It's not the magic; it's the person. I didn't return to school the following semester.
After losing the internship, I was approached by a lady, about 15 years my senior. She had noticed that I had become awakened and offered to mentor and help me. Her name was Daiyu. After speaking with Dad and Pops about it, and them meeting her, we decided that I could be her student, she my mentor. Took around 2 years, but she taught me how to manifest, control and create. I follow the Wuxing tradition. Daiyu herself is Chinese and also taught me the language amongst other things relating to China.
Around 22 she offered me a job, helping her. She did mostly search and recover work. Working freelance or for the authorities. After very little thought I agreed. It's been 2 years since I had a real job, and I don't want to mooch off my dads forever. Most cases we did were easy. A few though, they made me start thinking about the government and the corporations. Some of the cases didn't make sense, but Daiyu told me not to pursue it further. We were hired to find whatever and we did that. Beyond that, it wasn't our business. While it bothered me deep down, I accepted her answer.
Daiyu and I became close, we were like sisters. Best friends. It was nice to have a female influence around now and then. tee hee. Even if Dad and Pops could share opinions on what guys were cute. hehe
On the night of September 9, 2061 while hanging out with Daiyu and my dads at home, I changed. First I thought I was just getting itchy. Started scratching the back of my neck when I noticed it was hairy, furry even. I jumped up in shock only to fall to my knees grasping at my eyes, screaming in pain. Daiyu and my parents didn't know what was going on. Daiyu thought someone may have been casting spells or something on me and went to check the yard and the area, but came back empty handed. They brought me to my bedroom, unsure of what to do. I lay on the bed for several hours as parts of my body changed. The reshaping of my eyes was disturbing and painful, but the tail was, that was the creepiest. It was like someone grabbed onto my spine and kept pulling and pulling. My body tried to resist the changes, which only made it more painful. I imagined this is what it feels like to have your spine torn out. As my tail came into existence it also itched as the fur grew from it. My ears had also taken new form, like an elf. That was likely the least painful thing.
While this was going on with me, my parents and Daiyu got reports of it happening to others. Many people were afraid, and it was decided for the time being I was to stay inside to keep me safe. I don't care what kind of metahuman you are; you still posses the instinct that if it's different; get rid of it. And they tried. One day I made the mistake of answering the door while everyone was busy. Bruises hurt. Thankfully though, once again, there was Dad, Pops and Daiyu to save my ass.
It took a couple months before people were done freaking out about us Changelings. When more and more of us appeared, people began calming down and leaving home was once more possible. Although sunglasses and a long coat were now my new style. No half shirts anymore either. Fur goes from the nape of my neck down my spine to the end of the tail. At least the tail is useful. Would suck if it flogged about on its own.
By the time 2062 rolled about I was back out on the streets, a little more cautious then before, but back out and about and returning to search and recover jobs with Daiyu. Something still bothered me about our jobs. Things... they weren't right. Why and how could corporations do these things without the authorities stopping them? Again, Daiyu told me to not worry about it. Collect my cred sticks and go home happy. Daiyu and I began arguing over these ordeals. She kept telling me I was safer keeping my nose out of it. But part of me couldn't accept just watching things happen. We continued to work together, although things were a little more tense.
My dads were a bit worried that I wouldn't accept answers and that I believed there was more to everything than meets the eye. For them I calmed down and just kept my head low. There wasn't anything I could do at this point that wouldn't put them in any danger.
In 2063 though, I think my prayers were answered. Yep, the crash. Yep, I got wiped. While some people tried to convince me to try and get my SIN back, I refused. This was the break I needed. I could keep my family safe. I didn't exist any more. It was time to move out keep them safe. They helped me find a modest apartment. Nothing too flashy or crappy. Enough for me. Pops helped me decorate it, while Dad picked out the appliances.
After the crash, Daiyu started approaching me with more intense jobs. The things she used to try to steer me clear of. I guess my nagging her paid off? Or maybe she's just been waiting for the right person to do these follow ups? Whatever the reason, she hooked me up with some contacts and jobs.
So from then till now? Yeah, I run the shadows. It's quite satisfying at times when I get to find the source of these missing people or items. It feels good to bring someone's dad home, or locate someone's missing files. The authorities aren't handling these things. Too afraid of the corporations it seems. Well, someone has to do it right? Let's just hope my sense of justice is never clouded like the real authorities. Money is nice, but justice just tastes so much better. <end entry>
