Benevolent Big Sister (FA:United 2015 Commission)
First of four commissions at FA:U, this one is for
thehotrodhero, with two of his characters, Kelly and Layla crossing a shallow pond. Well "somewhat shallow", as Kelly seems to have lost sight of her lower legs, so it's anyone's guess if the water will get any deeper. All that matters is that Layla stays dry, 'cause that's what big sisters are for...in this instance. Layla seems confident that their crossing will be successful. Coping with soaking-wet overalls afterward will be Kelly's job :D
Technical:
For post-scan processing, I converted the greyscale scan to 1-bit B/W before switching it back to 24-bit for the greyscaling. I had already decided that I was going to put a simple sky gradient in the pic to make the characters stand out. The other stuff I came up with involved fixing minor linework errors, widening Layla's muzzle slightly, straightening out the linework of the pier in the backdrop, hatching its underside and adding a reflection in the water. I also cleared and re-drew the hatching making up the shadows in both characters' eyes, then added some additional greyscale shadows to the clouds and the waves rippling out from Kelly as she wades forward. Not to mention shadowing her hips and legs as they disappear into the depths of the pond.
Pencil in bristol, inked with Micron pen. Digital cleanup, minor corrections and quickie gradients performed in Micrografx Picture Publisher 10. Single-layer edit, 24MB scan cropped to active area after reduction.

Layla: "Well, you see, there's this viper and tortoise that want to cross a river. The viper asks the tortoise to carry it on its back across a river. The tortoise hesitates, afraid of being bitten, but the viper argues that if it did so, they would both drown. Considering this, the tortoise agrees, but midway across the river the viper does indeed bite the tortoise, dooming them both. When the tortoise asks the viper why, the viper replies it couldn't help it - it's their nature..."
Under her feet? Probably not much.
I'm getting from the setup provided by the commissioner that they're supposed to make it across, but the water is too murky for her to see her feet. My guess is she has local knowledge that told her the pond was shallow enough to wade across.

You'll have to ask
thehotrodhero above--he's the one who commissioned the pic.
