Nah, they're okay. I always watched their behaviour for a while before getting really close to them. One was dangerous that day: half of its face was swollen. Poor thing. When I approached him (her? I can't remember) it made a very angry grunt at me. I backed off right away. At another zoo, they were a bit too eager to eat and I was afraid of getting scratched so I left them alone. But most were nice. I even lied down and let them eat the food off of me! One climbed totally on me! Another one chewed on my moustache! :3
Poor little kid got scared... I'm a bit angry at the idiots who laughed at that... Take a look at the comments; I went somewhat medieval on this moron. I'm not Australian, but I'm an animal nut who's done her research and I'm not one of those idiots that think every member of a species is friendly just because I've seen a tame one being handled by an expert. Probably one of the most dangerous animals under a hundred pounds that you could mess with is a wild mother hog, even in captivity they can be nasty.
What I've learned about roos is how very differently they behave from one petting zoo to another. Some were scared easily, other were very friendly. I went back to the same zoo two weeks after my 1st visit and a different keeper was around. The same mob of roos were behaving differently! It seems that their environment and upbringing plays a big role in their behavior.
There was better than kissing roos: hugging roos! THAT'S hard to achieve! They don't like being hugged. I managed only a few times, from behind (aside from stretching their necks to smell you, they hate frontal body proximity).
Hugging a roo, that was pure heaven. Murrrrrr.
