This is commission I just finished today for
viciousmink of their character Sister Karen.
Now one of the things the client mentioned was that temple that Karen resided at was not some dark, ominous dwelling but instead was rather light, and clearly lit. So I decided to to play with the shadows and the direction of the light to make it more visually interesting. Also I played with a couple design tricks that I've seen in real life to make the scene more interesting.
First I put the viewer at the bottom of the stairs so you are looking up at Karen. This places her visually in a more dominant position. Also I tapered the width of the runner carpet on the stairs to make the stairs seem higher and longer than they are. Also it helps draw the viewers attention up to Karen....Not that she needs much help being noticed. Finally I made some choices on colors to help create more contrast. The majority of the picture is light earth tones and reds. So I put lots of violets into Karen's fur to create more contrast between her and her environment. Also I used a very vertical composition to once again create this sense of height.
The image is roughly 11"x 20" and is done on Strathmore 500 series 2ply vellum Bristol board. It is primarily colored pencil with some marker pen, technical pen, and a tiny bit of gouache.
I hope you like what you see. Please help make more art like this possible by supporting me at Patreon
