That is certainly true even if most clothing is nowhere near as destructible as art and stories make it.

Yeah, I think in some cases it'd make more sense to wriggle out of your clothes than to have them truly exploding. Certainly shoes would rarely explode as depicted. But a lot of people find it fun and enjoyable, so the exaggerated effects persist!

It took me some time to find it but Destrier did a useful journal on it last year http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/6332749/ . People like the exaggerated effects as it emphasizes the change more and otherwise you end up quite a lot of the transformation not being visible due to clothing.
