Around the time, a rumor goes through town telling of a demon named Mephistopheles capable of granting wishes. Faustus Envius, dissatisfied with his life, decides to try summoning this demon.

The summoning goes horribly wrong.
Mephistopheles' massive power is split into 7 shards: Pride, Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth and Envy.
The former 6 spread out over the continent, taking the form of terrible demons.
Not only that, but the influence of Mephistopheles' power also lets lesser demons take shape in the mortal world, becoming a worldwide threat.
The empty shell of Mephistopheles that remained sank back into the netherworld.

However, the shard of Envy bore itself into Faustus' soul, attracted to his jealousy towards people living a prosperous life.

Using Faustus's soul as a womb and feeding off on his jealousy, the shard of Envy slowly gives birth to the Undead Demon King of Everlasting Envy...
This entitiy would influence and corrupt Faustus into becoming evil.

The resulting chaos of the failed summoning knocks Faustus' bookshelves over.
One of the plates used to put the books in alphabetical order comes off, and Faustus reads the plate out loud before falling unconscious; N-V.
