When I was in secondary school, I was scolded for not using a calculator in math class, for adding up scores on peer tests and such. I always used long multiplication and long division, which slowed down the process and everyone was annoyed with me. For many things, we were expected to use a calculator to get the result for an equation, without actually been given any formula tools or explanation of what the equations were about to comprehend them. I would like to have been given the knowledge to understand what Trig was, so that I could get results from thinking, rather than pushing buttons on a hand-held computer. "Oh, we're teaching this to you to develop your critical thinking." Really? Then why am I not being allowed to think?

So for all those students ....what do you do when the batteriess die in their calculators? Or they drop them.....

Yeah, we were being taught behaviours, not knowledge. A chimpanzee can match shapes and push buttons in exchange for a reward. I found the majority of math classes to be extremely frustrating, because I didn't know what was going on or how to solve anything when I'd forgotten the order of operations. I failed grade 11 math because I found it grossly incomprehensible, and I had too much pride to ask for help.

Fast forward to now, I use spreadsheets to process math, because I can think about the tasks that I need to accomplish, see the required formulas visually, and I get the results that I want because I understand what I'm doing.

Ahhhh! Understanding what you are doing....and to what end.

A concept that seems to be missing from todays teaching.

What if one of the students had dyscalculia/math disability where they are legally accommodated to a calculator?

What if they go to the principal/dean and start threatening lawyers and threatening to go to the media? Refusing to provide an accommodation for a disabled student REALLY makes a school/teacher look bad.
