A lot of Junji Ito's stories are this mix of horror and silliness. Sometimes there's good pure horror, but often times it just goes down into goofy endings lmao.

btw if you're still interested in checking out more of his stuff, I recommend reading his take on the original Frankenstein story! probably the best graphic novel version of the original book by Mary Shelly (that I've seen at least).

I completely agree with you on the fact that most of the time he mixes horror and silliness, my favorite exemple is in that story where there's a woman who is SEXUALLY attracted to a house... no need to say more

Yea, Junji Ito is one freakin' weird chap when it comes to his horror.

Japanese manga is really weird because they don't take the time to understand what the hell they are writing about, like Quaballah runes in a Japanese hero group of police detectives with katanas attacking witches in drag, as a for instance. Weird on a scale of one to ten they are usually 15! plus they use all four types of Japanese Characters in their comics fro different things in the same language but with hiragama or kenji I forget what the other two are called.

I still firmly believe Ito ate some mushrooms that grew out of cow poop when he wrote Gyo.

I've only read one thing by Junji Ito, and that was when I was younger. It was called Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror. If you really want the horror that Junji can instill, I suggest you read that. I still have some mental scars from that thing. >_<

Forget manga, just when you're reading any sort of literature, you can't put it down / turn it off, then you cross the event horizon and it hits you. It's glorious, possibly horrifying.

Personally I liked Hellstar Remina. It was quite a different story, with interesting ideas. Gory as a Saw movie, but oddly interesting.
