A couple years ago, someone asked me what I thought my generation's greatest flaw is. I didn't even really have to think about it.
I include myself in this: Many of us have no concept of saving for a rainy day, or of planning for the future in general. We live in the NOW, and much like the grasshopper in the famous Aesop's fable, dance and play when we should be working to be prepared for the hard times. I'm not about to try and speculate what caused this, because in the end trying to place the blame is not going to ultimately fix the problem. We have a habit of buying expensive items that we'll either bore with quickly or will become obsolete in a few years and will need to be replaced again with often more expensive things.
I made this as a reminder to myself, because as of right now I should be saving for a house. When shiny pretty things come around and I have the money for them, it's very difficult sometimes to try and look at the bigger picture. Will this be something useful to me down the road? How important is having this thing, really? In the end, very few things I buy could be considered as important as a house... somehow even knowing that I struggle.

That's not the worst of it.
My money comes from my parents.
I get 300 a month and I'm lucky if I can make it to the week before my check arrives without going over.
But I do spend a lot of money on things like:
Gas: even though it's dead cheap right now, I'm still spending about 20-something a tank
Bottled Water: the tap water in this town is completely undrinkable even with filtration; thus this is a necessary evil
Tissue: On bad allergy days I can go through a whole box no problem, which can be bad, considering that tissues costs about 2 dollars a box for stuff that doesn't feel like I'm wiping my nose with a cheese grater.
Cleaning supplies: some bleach here, some detergent there, some toilet cleaner here, two different kinds of body wash, shampoo, scrubbers to clean the shower with....it can get pricey fast.
Drycleaning for my comforter: admittedly this isn't a common expenditure, but it still runs me about 30 dollars just to get it cleaned.
And then the rest goes into things like fast food, maybe a book or two, a movie, and possibly online commissions.

That last part.
We recently moved from living with my husband's mother because, we moved in saying we were going to save. Every week, she begged us for more and more cash.
It cost so much just to get some bathroom cleaner, 3 towels, some shampoo, and sponges. It was insane D:

Don't suppose you've got a health food store anywhere nearby? Get a whole ton of concentrated liquid Dr. Bronner's soap. You'll know it by all the CRAZY printed on the label. Buy the biggest bottle you can find so you save the most money. Then buy a few little squeeze bottles and fill them with the soap, diluted with an equal amount of water. The stuff is ridiculously strong and should last you a LONG time, especially if you use a loofah with it. The only bad thing about Dr. Bronners is if you use the peppermint "flavor" to wash your face YOUR BRAIN WILL TASTE LIKE PEPPERMINT FOR HOURS.
Heh, I'm more the opposite. I have a piggy bank and I shove extra money in there and don't let myself touch it until an emergency comes along. My friends are always telling me to just take money out of it to get the latest video game or what have you, and act all confused when I refuse.
I am actually quite proud of the fact that I have a fair bit of money saved up. The problem is that I have dead-beat family members that keep asking for money and well... I mean... they are my family. But I still have enough should anything happen, I just eat ramen and don't splurge on things I don't need.
I'm feeling the crunch now because I didn't put in my hours for this paycheck and now I have to wait until the 15th; I've been rather poor and money keeps going down the drain. I don't even believe that I spend it on expensive things; I mean, food is a good thing to spend your money on, isn't it? Nevertheless, it all seems to disappear somehow.
Yep, that's me completely. As soon as I get any amount of money, my habit is to spend it right away (with the misguided belief that "I'll still have plenty left over when I'm done"). Example: My $1500 from a month's work? Gone in about two months on random shit. I'm really hoping I get my act together and start controlling my spending soon.
All that aside, excellent comic (as always), definitely made me laugh

THIS REMINDS ME OF MY SISTER :DDD
I on the other hand, am so picky and indecisive that I tend not to spend a fucking dollar unless I actually need something. This comes from my parents bitching about bills maybe 8 feet away from my bedroom door every afternoon since I was 7. >:/

I used to think that I was didn't buy much because I was frugal. It turned out that it was more because I didn't have any income to spend anyways. As soon as I get money now it begins a mysterious kind of reverse interest, whereby it quietly leak out of my bank account without any conscious action on my part
I totally agree with you on this. It's a pain to save yet so easy to spend. Shiny things are like, "Oh wow! I needsz!!! NOW!!!." This is the first year of several that I actually started saving. However it's not quick enough to purchase a house now, but I'm aiming for some sort of retirement.
Blame might not change it.....but it'll sure make me feel better. I was just like this, until I moved out and had to live on less then 300 dolalrs a month and went hungrey for a week. amzing how being desperate enoguh to hunt food with your bare hands can really change your lifestyle
Gawd, this has me written all fuckin' over it. I have so much shit I've bought and used for maybe two weeks max before tiring of it. And I'm addicted to 7-11 as well. My check comes every two weeks, and it's usually spent in eight or nine days. I need to take a lesso- OMG CHAINCHOMP PLUSHIE!!! *swipes debit card*
I tend to be very reluctant to spend money at all...
Yet I get all sorts of knickknacks off the internet for cheap.
Otherwise I see if I can get it on sale or free o 3o
I haven't gotten any income since early October but I have plenty of money saved for expenses.
Granted I'm halfway spent in my savings... but that's not too bad really, plus I have a job now and should be getting paid again soon :3

I use all my moneys on books and food XD and paying my parents 30-50 dollars per paycheck, cuz I'm like that... I pay "rent" so as to be prepared to tell them that I paid ahead for food and water, and heating, and phone bills XD at least on my meager part. I can brag that I don't spend TOO much, I spend just enough, to not get into trouble :P
little brother had parents pay for a total of $90 in text messages. he had $60 of it....

This is so my brother. Always having to buy "merch" when he gets a bit o' cash in his hands. :( Him and my mom are similar in that aspect, actually. Always having to keep up with the Joneses.
In my case, I have a problem parting with cash for some reason, so I tend to have plenty saved up unless I REAAAALLY want something. Like, I get a case of Buyer's Remorse no matter what I buy. XD It's why I hardly ever commission other artists, even though there are many that I do want to commission. And it's probably why I don't have many cool things either, rofl

The guy writing it has good points about getting out of debt, establishing a savings safety buffer, getting out of the instant gratification mindset, preparing for the rainy day / retirement, and so on.

I hate spending money, I love getting it, and cant stand watching my money get less and less. The last thing I bought was an MP3 player for about £20 ($40) and I still use it, so I'd say it was a good investment c: Though most of the time, when I get any kind of money, I just bang it in the bank and leave it there until I need it. My friends though....they're hopeless at saving money >.<
I wish I was in that situation.
I know a few folks who are jobless and almost homeless who really need some help.

And I've got a wife who makes sure that I don't do that kind of thing.

I myself dont have a prob with spending money. I dont spend my cash once i get it that day..I hold it cuz i need it for food and whatnot for the month.. unlike my bro who has a JOB and is makeing like 1000 bucks or more a month and once he gets a paycheck weekly he just goes of spending..me and mum are like wtf..but my mom isnt any better anyways cuz she still "trusts" in my bro and gives him money to pick up like cat litter or some food but then he comes back with little and my mom still wonders where he spent the rest.. she hasnt learnd >_> even after like 89 times of doing it.
than again..mostly all the kids and now growing adults just want to spend spend spend..on the latest fashion or whatever parties ect ect.
I dont have a big issue with spending cash cuz most of the times when i was growing up,all that pleased me was a paper and pencil.. i'd even make my own toys out of paper <_<
and if i do get like a pricey thing..I wont get anything that pricey for a very long long time..its just like a one time thing rlly. Oh well though..most of my generation has there good parts for abit of being open minded than the last generation..but they still have their flaws

I have this problem but I counter it by using a bank account that I can't withdraw money from even if i wanted to :D
Though that kind of backfired when my father gave me a credit card :[ (it was for emergencies, but you can guess what that ended up being used for)

I've been far too broke for far too long to do this anymore. Seems like every year, I slide down a slippery slope... Every year, my income is less and less. Right now, I sell plasma twice a week to scrape cash together for rent, I don't spend a penny unless it's absolutely necessary.
It's gotten to the point where I automatically assume I can't buy anything. It doesn't even matter what it costs, I just constantly think I have nothing. "I can't buy that candy bar, it costs too much."
Of course, the real problem comes when I start telling myself things like, "I can't buy that medicine, I'll just hope the fungal infection goes away on its own." ~_~
As it is, I have to wait until student loans come in late Jan/earlly Feb (Yay, further sinking into horrible crushing debt!) before I'll be able to replace my computer's power supply. Until then, my tower is completely offline.

Gah! I'm so guilty of blowing through my monthly allowance way too quickly (especially now that I live in California again)^^;
My worst example of indulging in shiny things, had to be was last October when I spent my hundred dollar birthday check (along with $60 of my own money) on a new iPod. Of course before I got to the register, I spotted the first 3 seasons of Duckman on DVD, and just had to throw in another $40 for thatX3
After all, i-if I don't buy things right when they see 'em, they might disappear forever, and I'll be kicking myself for the next couple of months for not jumping on it. So that makes it okay!:D
Now I gotta go off and spend $20 on a ticket to go see Carlos Alazraqui this weekend=P (hey! he was the voice of Rocko! I'd be doing a dishonor for not seeing him in personX3)

o3o i've had the same laptop for 4 years now. I've been wanting a new one.... but then I think....
A) do I have the money? (usually kills any desire)
a) Do I want an expensive one? (kills most remaining desires)
B) do I need a new computer?
b) whats wrong with this one?
C) Do I want to transfer everything one program at a time to the new one? (Kills all desire at a rate of 100%)

wow I'm not like that at ALL >>; and I'm 22 :3 Although that's just one of me, I can point to... well, everyone I know except 2 or 3 people, but they spend all their huge savings when they don't have jobs for years at a time - so it's pretty much the same thing to me ^^;
My husband and I have this problem. Granted, we get our bills paid, we get all sorts of good groceries and we live comfortably. But we have NO safety net. It's a precarious edge to tred, but the second we have money we suddenly need movies or video games or candy. I bought a new game for my DS Lite several months ago and I have yet to play it. A couple months ago I bought a new game for my Wii and I haven't even opened it. WHY DO I DO THIS?!?! AHHHHHHHHHH.
My mother gets on my case about this SO much too and you'd think with her constant nagging I'd be better about my financial stability, but I can't stop buying the things I want. This generation is a pile of slobbering consumers and even though many of us had parents that tried to teach us the importance of saving we can't seem to do it. It seems amplified in the furry fandom, too. I don't know why that REALLY is, as furry is a varied bunch of people, but every person I've ever met in the fandom has financial issues.
tl:dr; woooooooooooo.

I just paid for a 7 grand bike in cash with 4 grand in the bank. But I understand your point.
Although at the end of the day even a house isn't as important as people think. You buy a house; spend 30 years paying it off. At which point your 60 and it needs $100,000 worth of repairs due to aging, which you cannot afford. You die and the house goes to the city or council, usually destroyed to make for new overpriced apartments. Unless it's in your childerns will, who usually sell the house to split the money between them. XD
I say Spend money on making your children and grand children as happy as possible. And luckily they wont put you in an old folks home you become an old folk. =D

ITS CALLED A SAVINGS ACCOUNT AND ONLY BUY WHAT YOU NEED!
i only buy what i need, and i have cloe to 1,000 in my savings, and i have only been working since 2008.
yea, it goes the same for licensed generation Y aswell, i have news for y'all, IF YOUR PARENTS BUY YOU A POS 1980's or 90's COMPACT, AND YOU ONLY USE IT TO GET TO AND FROM WORK AND SCHOOL, IF IT FUCKING WORKS, DRIVE IT!
i got asked this "dude, why is your radio still stock, don't you want to listen to cd's" my response "yea, it's called this" *pulls out a cheap FM transmitter and tuns to an un-used frequincy* "20 bucks over 250, i go for 20 bucks"
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY A CAMARO IF YOUR CORSICA WORKS FINE.

i use my debit card 1-2 time weekly, so there.
when i do shop for groceries, i buy them uuslay once every 2-3 months, i get like $200 worth so it will last.
i'm gonna put it the way my buisiness teacher did "all you please me satisfy me people, will get screwed in the comming months, the economy is gonna bite you in the ass!"

LOL! Well, pretty much everyone has had this kind of problems with money (I have too)
"boob job instead of a heart transplant" this line is priceless, I can even see the guy waking up after the operation: "Thanks doctor... W-w-wait, what are these!? *has a heart attack*" guess she was playing Trauma Center

Oh yeah, including myself in this as well (even with my attempts to better myself), this really is a problem of the generation. I do know how to save and plan for a rainy day, but I do admit that it's not always "complete" in planning. That is to say, while I may have paid my bills months in advance, I procrastinate in finding a job for when those months will eventually pass by, thinking that I've plenty of time before the Fall comes.
Quite right on this one; thanks for sharing.
