Football primer: When a team's doing badly, the first thing they generally do is fire the manager. We're eight games into the season, there's an international break next weekend, so this is usually a good time for the first sackings. Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat resigned after the latest game (even though a 2-2 draw with West Ham pushed them up to the lofty heights of 19th) while Liverpool, a club with higher expectations, sacked their manager Brendan Rodgers on the same day. Meanwhile, Chelsea, a club with famously high expectations and famously trigger-happy when it comes to their managers' contracts, have so far refrained from firing Jose Mourinho, but how long will it last if they stay down in 16th?
