Thanks! I think, but am not sure, a way to handle it is gesture to structure and lighting, where gesture is an overall movement - like drawing a wave or other effect - and structure and lighting is figuring out where the individual little critters lie, how much of them you really want to show. If that makes any sense?
I really agree. Take a huge flock of birds as an example. We see so little of each individual bird. But we see the direction and the shape of the flock, it's swirls and eddies, the twists and turns, before we ever see a single bird. Bait Balls of tuna or the like as well; a shimmering whirlpool ring more than fish. You did a great job on this; it's really hard to get the levels of detail vs what you leave indistinct and to the viewers imagination (amazing how much the audience an bring to a piece of art or writing!) Well done!
