Ah yes! Glad you asked yo, I love talkin about my characters.
Long story short he was out on a field mission and got caught up in a severe rockfall - he was with his best friend, but his friend didn't make it. He made it out with one wing mangled beyond repair, so he got a mech wing fashioned for himself.
It's mostly for appearance - though he can fly with it, even if he shouldn't actually be able to. The reason he can fly with it goes into spoiler territory tho, as I'm going to be starting an interactive comic about my PMD universe sometime next year ;0
