This too was shot at the Newport Aquarium earlier today.
This interesting creature of the water is an Archerfish. An Australian native, these fish are insectivores, meaning they eat the meat of insects. However, they do not just jump up and snatch them in their mouths, nor do they swim up and gulp it up instantly. Instead, the Archerfish, as it name implies, will shoot at an insect perched on a leaf close to the water. To do this, the Archerfish swims up to the surface, its mouth lying above the waves, and then it spits its collected water at its prey until it falls off the leaf and into the water. The Archerfish then gobbles its catch up. Its accuracy is so keen, it hardly misses, though it takes a few tries to get its prey in the water.
