Well there was a big hint that Pearls actually weren't soldiers and just were servants and it was brought up right after Sworn to the Sword. Because in the song Do it for Her, Pearl said "You are not meant for fighting, but that doesn't mean you're not prepared to fight."
And while she was saying it to Connie, she was also hinting this about Pearl herself. Because Pearl kept slipping up and mentioning Rose, it made you think that Pearl was really singing the song about herself. So a theory popped up that basically Pearls are not fighters, they're just servants but because Pearl loved Rose she would learn to fight to protect her. (As well as learn many other things)

People are just really good at picking up hints and clues c: The creators confirmed that it takes about 9-11 months to create an episode and they work on about 5 at a time. So no they don't listen to fan theories and work them in because most episodes are already made or in production, and this particular episode was literally created over a year ago : http://i.imgur.com/SFiPDAn.png (from the writer's twitter)
I think that this means there are multiples of EACH type of gem- FINALLY a solid answer for that! I mean, it only makes sense because there are only so many types of gemstones. But peridot even said 'haha a Peridot with a Pearl, what would they say back on homeworld!'
Which I think means that even Peridots are lower class ranks.
They are just natural technicians, whereas Pearls are revealed to be pretty 'pets' or servants naturally.
I really wonder if this verifies that back on homeworld, gems exist as if they are living in a caste system. Meaning- whatever they are born as determines the rest of their life and their role. They cannot climb higher or go lower, they are stuck with what they were 'born' into. So it seems like homeworld is insanely strict. There is probably a massive imbalance between the smaller gems (like Amethyst, Peridot, Ruby, Sapphire, etc) and the bigger gems like Rose, Jasper, and the Diamonds. (Like the poor versus the rich percentages in real life) I'd even wager to bet that most of the 'bigger' gems lead a bully-like lifestyle. As in, they treat the smaller gems like slaves or less than themselves. Likely restricting relationships like fusions to keep the smaller gems from uprising or sizing up against them.
Maybe this will be true and be another reason the Crystal Gems stayed on Earth.
AAHH I LOVE THIS SHOOOWW.

They have been hinting at this since they first showed the kindergarten. And more or less confirmed it when Jasper and Peridot first arrived on earth. "Some lost defective pearl, a puny overcooked runt" they left clues in the dialog. Pearl goes on to further imply her position was non combatant when she teaches Connie to sword fight. Saying that she was not made to fight. The devil is in the details. I do believe that yes, what they are born as determines what they will be for the rest of their lives in the Homeworld society. The show takes a few things from the Dragon Ball series and that is a theme found there as well in terms of Vegeta and his Saiyan lineage, the idea that Goku is beneath him because Vegeta is royalty and therefor better by default. And the Hero in both of these is the antithesis of that ideal.
I grew up watching a lot of the same things Rebecca Sugar did so I absolutely love finding the common themes and references to all the greats from my childhood. =3

Yeah, but to me that wasn't solid enough. Probably because I WANTED there to be multiples, and didn't want to let my personal preferences alter the way I interpreted things. Up until now there's never been anything, short of Pearl once saying (in the episode 'Friend Ship') that 'she's just a pearl, she's useless on her own'. But even that was pretty vague.
But finally I have something else, now I'm excited to see more backstory into homeworld and the crystal gem's past experiences :>

God your so right!!!!! Ugh I can tell that you're right with the social structure of the home world gems! I honestly can't wait for more episodes of Steven universe because you can tell something big is coming! Also I kinda want to see a fusion of peridot with one of the gems or Steven! Maybe Rebbeca will make it happen!!!
We don't sound obsessive over the show do we? XD

To be honest, this episode really changed my view of pearl. Like, I knew she had to have more backstory somehow but this really was an incredible twist that I honestly didn't see coming. Since this gives us an idea that there's multiple of each gem I'm really hoping we get to meet some of them in the future!! Man this show just keeps getting better! I'm so so glad I started watching it. It's the first cartoon in a long long time that I've truly enjoyed!
This episode was good! I was so offended for Pearlllll. She's no doubt a good chunk of why SU Earth even exists and didn't get destroyed and that little green jerk better recognize. xD I was so proud when she punched her, lol. I'm excited to see homeworld. I hope when we meet the other "repeat" gems, they all favor eachother but don't look EXACTLY alike. Like maybe some pearls have ponytails, are a little bit taller/shorter, or have longer/shorter noses? Etc.
Btw, I love Rose in the b/g hereee.

Honestly, I was most proud at the end of the episode when Peridot was willing to try to change her pride and her homeworld-brainwashed ideals to work alongside Pearl in a civil way, and despite offending her greatly- Pearl accepted this and disregarded all the things she had said before.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!
I think that's a character development we're seeing. Like Pearl is figuring out who she is on her own, which I think is a healthy idea to teach/show people. I love her relationship with Rose, but it is almost obsessive and she was practically lost without her. I'm happy to see that she's branching out and viewing her life as a separate thing and not just a devotion to someone who is (as far as we know) gone forever.
It's kinda like a real-life death, how to cope with the grief and overcome it without losing yourself in the process.
THAT, or she just didn't want to share personal information with Peridot while she was talking her down, haha

yeah, i definitely have more respect for pearl now. She still has a long way to go for me right now. So far Peridot is still my fave out of the two, i just love her cockiness and she so funny. Pearl was just too stuck up, and still is, for someone who is suppose to be a care taker. It was out of character for me since she never seemed ashamed of her love for Rose, so it was out of nowhere for me. in a way i hope youre right but i dont know. Also, did you here that Rainbow Quartz. could be coming back?! <3 Apprently Pearl and Steven are gonna Fuse! Im so excited! Part of me feels like him fusing with Pearl first is her being selfish considering her love of Rose and what happened with Garnet, but i cant wait to see what happens.
