Commission for
Edge-chan.
Porcupines are mostly nocturnal, and often fall form tress since they climb out to the tips of branches to eat the buds. These are two fact that always stuck with me while I am in the bush. Probably because it's both humorous, and somewhat unexpected. Also, I have always wanted to be in a scenario where a sudden "thump" would startle me, only to find a porcupine had fallen and disturbed the peace of the forest. It would be a very cartoon moment.
Asides from the Wolverine and Skunk, it's the only [nocturnal] animals that have black-and-white colours [in Canada]- the patters are so distinct that other animals imprint on what they are- and would rather leave them alone.
I wanted the composition to relate everything I mostly associate with Porcupines- the tree, the moon, and of course, the distinct markings. The high-contrast pallet lends an atmospheric, and associative touch. The tree colour and the moon colour can be found within the porcupine, all the while remaining distinct connection between the two.
