Ah, the air-scoop inspiration is much clearer here, neat! I once read a sci-fi/fantasy novel that had large flying creatures that were used for scouting (after the end of the world as it had been for many years) and they had massive air-passages to cool both their brain and their huge flight muscles, was fun!
