Endless Realms bestiary - Phonoi
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
The phonoi are a race of malevolent beings from the Dream Realm often mistaken for shapeshifters, but in truth, it's their ability to reflect aspects of the soul that gives this impression. They are deadly killers, typically guising themselves in the form of the target's most beloved - whether out of cruelty or cunning, it's uncertain - although when their disguise is broken, they appear as dark, lean humanoids with reflective skin and a notable lack of faces, garbed in mist and their forms blurred by magic.

I can see this being an interesting npc to play with. Have him join the party before anyone new it was after one of the party members. I'm betting since these are from the dream realm these would be the nightmare creatures incarnate. Does the mist have any special properties since it surrounds them? Like making people fill ill, drowsy, or uncomfortable?
*nods* Insidious characters in disguise, not what they appear, are always fun >:3 I'm not 100% certain about the mist, even though it's a concept I sort of came up with myself - it was more a tool for the team to work with - but I was thinking it would help the phonoi with their disguises, turning into appropriate clothing/accessories, perhaps including their murder weapons? :O
These are actually less nightmare creatures (that's more the Fear's job), but more insidious and subtle. The art director's original idea is that they're killers that look like the victim's most beloved, making it extremely difficult for the victim to defend itself.
