"Oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap!"
Thus went the muttering of young Tara Dunkel: frantic, frustrated, and only a little late for her Geography exam.
With a titanic effort the young redhead ran to the bus and boarded the damn thing mere moments before it drove off. After getting her ticket sorted she sat down in the nearest empty seat, wiped the sweat off her brow, and took several much-needed deep breaths. She shouldn't have played that last stage of FTL before leaving; Christ, what had she been thinking?
Tara was kicking herself both mentally and physically, but at least the bus would only take five minutes: she'd still be allowed into the exam hall if she hurried and didn't waste any more time… she hoped. She honestly wasn't sure, and the fact that she'd only skimmed the material wasn't helping her nerves either.
After a few more deep breaths she became aware of the sound of pencil-scratches, and only now did she remember that she had actually sat down next to another person, and not some conveniently person-shaped patch of nothingness.
The girl next to her was perhaps a few years older than Tara: her dark voluminous hair reached down to her waist, and she was drawing in a sketchpad propped up against her knees. The fingers holding the pencil were small and slender, and their nails were polished black. Tara's eyes had only drifted over for a moment and had no intention of lingering, until she saw what (or rather who) her neighbour had been drawing.
"Is that Harley Quinn?" Tara asked without thinking, and there was a half-second of fatally awkward silence before the other girl seemed to realize she'd been asked a question.
"Y-yes." she replied, turning to face Tara. "You know her?"
There was a gleam of surprised confusion in her eyes, which Tara could now see were a deep and vivid green. The girl's hand had stopped right as it was shading Harley's iconic jumpsuit, and the pencil now daintily hovered in mid-air.
"Uuuuhm, yeah." said Tara, still a little flustered over this uncharacteristic bit of social interaction. "I'm... I'm a big fan of hers. I just, ah, noticed you were drawing her and- it's good! That's, that's really good."
It was, too. The drawing showed Harley on a couch with her pet hyenas across her lap, as she scratched one of them behind the ears. Everything from the pose, to the hyenas' fur, to Harley's contented little smile, was all expertly done with a touch that was delicate but not clinical.
"Thank you." the girl replied, as a faint blush of pride crossed her face. "I try, you know?"
"Well, if that's the result, then I say 'keep on trying', you know?" Tara answered, whereupon she immediately facepalmed and said, "Sorry, sorry. That sounded so much better in my head."
"It's okay." the girl laughed, "I get what you were going for. I think."
"At least that makes one of us." Tara said with a wry smile, and she was shaking her head in disbelief at her own awkwardness when suddenly an outstretched hand appeared before her.
"I'm Susan." said the girl with the wavy dark hair and the emerald eyes. "What’s your name?"
"My name is Tara." she replied, and she gently but gladly shook Susan's hand. "Nice meeting you, Susan. So whatcha into besides Batman?"
"Oh all sorts of things." Susan said, and her eyes lit up as she started flipping through the sketchpad. "I got stuff in here from Korra, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, you name it."
Tara scarcely had time to take in the sheer level of detail on each page before Susan would turn to the next. Her feedback amounted to little more than variations on 'wow' and 'daaaaamn', but Susan seemed grateful all the same, and in between pages Tara's eyes would drift up to look at Susan's. They truly were emeralds: large and beautiful, and shining with a natural intensity that lured Tarah in and would not let her go.
"North Innsburg High School." announced a slightly metallic voice over the bus' speakers.
Reality crashed back into place all at once, and Tara found herself instinctively standing up as the doors of the bus began to open. Susan looked up at her with a puzzled look on her face, having either not heard the announcement or not realized the significance of it. Either way, Tara found herself suddenly torn between a renewed and desperate need to run to the exam halls, and a mysterious but utterly compelling desire to stay on the bus. As she stood frozen with indecision, Susan simply asked, "Is this your stop?"
"Hey mom!" Ellen called as she entered the kitchen.
"Hi sweetie!" replied Tara, giving the girl a quick kiss on her forehead. "How was school?"
"Great! But we've got to interview some family members for Social Studies by Thursday, so I was hoping maybe we could do that soon?"
"Oh you know I love to help, honey. Here, have a seat."
Tara pulled up two chairs and poured tea for the both of them while Ellen retrieved the assignment from her backpack along with a pen, a notepad, and a handheld recorder.
"Alright, question one:" the young girl proclaimed, reading verbatim from the assignment.
"How did your parents first meet?"
Tara quietly smiled to herself as she sipped her tea, and subconsciously fondled the golden ring around her finger. She looked at the figure that had silently moved into the doorway while Ellen had been setting up, and her smile grew wider.
"That's actually a funny story." she finally said, and a very similar smile appeared in the doorway:
a smile framed by dark voluminous hair, and a pair of emerald eyes.
I originally wrote this for my Creative Writing class a little while ago, and decided I liked it enough to put it here as well. I honestly don't think we’ll be seeing much more of these anytime soon, but I enjoyed writing this regardless.
This story and your soul belong to me.
And a cookie to you if can figure out why I picked those specific cartoons.

all we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.
seriously, that second bit made me smile so big. =w= that the entire first part was like a flashback of the second part was truly a perfect execution.
I'm going to hazard a guess that the reason behind those particular cartoons is because they are your influences for Seskra. how close am I?

Not terribly close, I'm afraid, though it certainly wasn't a bad guess. Honestly, it'd probably be correct if Seskra didn't predate them all (except for Batman: The Animated Series).
The reason I picked those specific shows is that I wanted a subtle bit of foreshadowing for the ending: all of those shows feature either explicitly lesbian characters or extremely heavily implied ones, and I liked the idea that this was why Susan (perhaps subconsciously) liked drawing those characters so much. I originally considered adding Xena: Warrior Princess to the list as well, but I figured that one would make it a little too obvious what I was trying to do, and it'd be a somewhat dated reference nowadays anyway. They're all great shows in their own right, but that unifying undercurrent of lesbian romance is what I wanted to tap into.

There is a lot of unresolved sexual tension between Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen. This 2-minute clip (and especially the last 10 seconds or so) puts it better than I ever could: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLyGQnKMeLU
After that episode aired the creator of the show said Marceline & Bubblegum used to date at some unspecified point, but he hasn't been able to officially write it into any episodes because certain foreign markets prohibit (implied) homosexuality in children's entertainment.
