I think I found out the reason for his Legion design. Apparently at one point during the war of the ancients he kidnapped Tyrande and then Malfurion was like "FUCK YOU! You're an oak tree now!" only he wasn't actually made into an oak tree, it grew around him and he was made into food for the oak tree.
