With the right frame, even the small can look big.
The trim actually did help quite a bit. We can better see that the picture is about Ami and her socks and not so much about empty space. (Even if the original version had a fully-detailed background, tightening the focus would still have helped.)
And she's certainly pleased with those socks (big socks, too). It's very nice work.
