Red's guild to personal weapons
Thought this up last night after listening to people bitch about people actually wanting to defend themselves and instead trust the police to be there in the nick of time in case of an emergency.
Yeah...Right.
So, I decided to have Red Shetland discuss personal weapons she approves of.

Which is better to defend your life? Having a handgun on your person with the knowledge how to use it when the threat occurs, or waiting the 20 min to an hour for a police officer with a gun to arrive to draw the chalk outline around your body after the thug has killed you.?
I just read about a woman who not only had martial-arts training, she was a member of the Society of Creative Anchronisms, so she knew how to handle the katana she had.
So...
Some dummy breaks into her house, home invasion.
Guy gets a number of punches to the head, and is held for the police in a corner by the woman with her katana.

Depends on the state. Nanny-states hate when you defend yourself... but even there, as they say, better to be judged by twelve than carried by six. Legal hassles happen, but they find it very difficult to actually convict someone when they acted in self-defense. Juries tend to find it a reasonable defense.

The problem with flails, is that the ball and chain can be difficult to control while swinging, and it takes time to get the momentum needed to break bone and rupture flesh. And then there's the issue of cramped spaces.
A stick, baton, club or truncheon will give you more control. Same with a hammer, with even more kinetic energy to spare.
For swords, sure they offer reach and chopping power, but require maintenance that may be costly at times, along with looking like a prat while carrying one, cramped spaces is also an issue, and don't get oneself started on the price tag for even the most modest design.
This is where the machete comes in, at a manageable size and price tag. With a spring temper to shrug off shocks that would make a traditional sword cringe with unease. And not having to pamper it means it can be kept in almost any condition.

You should create more of these artworks showing Red giving her opinion on weapons. It would be interesting to hear her take on various other weapons conceived by the various ethnic groups of humanity.
