It's VERY good, has a bunch of exciting turns for the bosses, a nice twist on typical combat with, and an excellent soundtrack.
However, the graphics even for a single dev are very bland and inconsistent, with the writing being well....sappy.
Replace "Metaphysics" with "Time" and a lot of it is a cluster of lolcats humor and anime tropes that would be overlooked and criticized if it didn't slap you in the face with it minutes in. The actual character arcs and depth would be considered passe and underdone by kids show standards. Not only that but the game's routes outside the "true" one are terrible. It's barely challenging outside two bosses in one route, and the game has zero replay value between SPOILERS never kill anything or kill everything. SPOILERS
However, it's charming, something we need more (with better polish and budget) in gaming, and an interesting homage to classic JRPGs.
It's a GOTY contender for sure, but sadly, that's more because our standards are getting incredibly low.

Your post is incredibly bizarre. You compliment the game yet you point out flaws like they'll ruin the game. And you're putting up misinformation.

I don't know what you're expecting but this is reminiscent of 8-bit console systems like NES and Master System. There's only so much you can do with those. I'd consider the prologue to look the simplest of all the areas but after that, it steps up the visuals. And the gorgeous music that compliments these areas help with the immersion so well.
with the writing being well....sappy
The "sappy" dialogue doesn't dominate the whole game and even when it does happen, it's written in an enjoyable manner. Not once is it groan-inducing.
Not only that but the game's routes outside the "true" one are terrible.
What are you talking about? The meat and potatoes of the game lies in the "neutral" route, which is where everybody will find entertaining. And adding to this...
It's barely challenging outside two bosses in one route
If this is what you believe of the "genocide" route, you've missed the whole point of it.

"this is reminiscent of 8-bit console systems like NES and Master System."
Except it isn't. It's just a cluster of gens mashed together. Hotlands is the most obvious where you got Game Boy Color level detailing on the floor and conveyor belt, but you got modern textures on the walls.
"The "sappy" dialogue doesn't dominate the whole game"
It ends up being the hook maaaany times though.
"Not once is it groan-inducing."
Alphys in general, and I REALLY wasn't immersed at all with the true final boss and his backstory as it was another SPOILERS power of friendship cakewalk everything from
Gurren Lagann to Persona 3 has done played completely straight. Only unlike P3, there's no challenge to the set up. SPOILERS
" The meat and potatoes of the game lies in the "neutral" route"
A route is defined as the moment the game as a whole becomes linear, gains a individual theme, and changes significantly from the other decisions.
Absolutely no key aspects of the game change as much as going completely opposing directions. While you can just reload to pacifist after the "neutral boss" if you do things "right" the first time.
So it ends up just being "fucking up pacifist", and "REALLY fucking up the pacifist route on purpose".
"If this is what you believe of the "genocide" route, you've missed the whole point of it."
The point of it can be just repeated by watching it, the average creepypasta, or a "Pokemon is cock-fighting" joke on Youtube. It isn't a great point. I wanted gauntlets of monsters with limited health,
the entire underground on watch, harder puzzles, have the "other" voice be more talkative and witty than you by the truckloads, intentionally draw out a fight, go TRULY OFF THE RAILS like Soul Nomad's demon path or LISA: The Painful RPG. Feel the actual rush and excitement I get from juggling old ladies with explosive rounds in Saints Row or destroy the same person over and over for easy exp in Disgaea, not be bored out my mind.
I'm still saying it's a very good game, just it's in that "Attack on Titan/Boyhood/Shovel Knight" area of criticism where it will take a few months before people compare to its equals and not the low points of today's media.
