Wow, this turned out really well.

Indeed! Since it's at night, there's not much light available. Sure, this lens can let a lot more light pass through, but it doesn't have stabilization, so you need a higher shutter speed. That, and if it was any slower you would start blurring the movements. So the only way is to turn up the ISO sensitivity. (Which is actually a lot more than 1600, since I used a raw processor to add exposure to the image.) In the full-size image, there's a lot of noise; especially in dark areas, where the low level of light behaving like particles means which pixel receives more proton start becoming random.

... that said, on the artistic side, I have no idea why this photo looked so appealing. I think the pose and the jacket might imply something about the character? The composition and the combination of elements aren't bad, but I'm not sure if they are good, either. This is why I think having a formal education is a boon in photography: I can never be sure that I'm doing the right thing, and good photos, for me, are essentially lucky accidents.

If it looks good to you then you did right. Trust yourself.
