I was feeling restless last week, and I put this design together over the course of two nights. Cut it all by hand. I thought it was fairly successful.
I also used this mask as more testing for the vinegaroon process I'm experimenting with. The black comes from a chemical reaction between rust, vinegar and the tannins in the leather, and it's permanently bonded into the material. It's not a dye. I like it, though it seems it doesn't always go all the way to black depending on the piece of leather. Also it takes a while for it to stop smelling of vinegar. I finished it off with neatsfoot oil, which makes it more supple and flexible than my masks usually are. (If I want the design to hold its shape, I prefer it to be stiff anyway.)
I need to transfer the pattern for this into CAD so I can laser-cut more copies of it. The next version I make I want to have a big Jack-O-Lantern creepy smile.
