A little background.
When I was in Girl Scouts, there was a program where we worked with Boy Scouts under the Explorer Scout name. One thing we did was learn about Native American culture. That included researching dance styles, making our own regalia, and traveling and dancig at powwows.
I miss that.
A LOT.
I think about it from time to time. I have and listen to powwow and Native American flute music, and watch live powwows when I can on live streaming.
Sadly, I will never get to dance again.
Unfortunately, because of fear of appropriation and loss of culture, many powwows are somewhat strict about who can dance.
And of course, I have no regalia to wear any more. I danced as a young teenager probably 20 years go, and even if I could find where it was stored, I wouldn't fit in anything but perhaps the breastplate any more.
Even if they let me dance, I can't dance without regalia, and I cant afford the time or money to make regalia when I am not sure when I'd get to a powwow or if I'd even be able to dance when I was able to go.
So its a little bit of a catch-22.
Even 20 years later, this music is still in my soul. I still both fly and feel terribly sad when I hear the beat of the drum because I know I love the music but I will always be on the outside looking in.
And to add insult to injury, I recently did one of those DNA tests, and I found out that I am 100% European. I have ZERO native blood in me.
Sorry, didn't mean to ramble before posting info about this art.
It's just a sketch, so it's a bit light. I am not sure if I will finish it or not, as there is SO much detail, I am not sure if I can get it all in a finished piece.
I was watching a live powwow in Wisconsin last night, and I felt like I needed to draw this.
It was actually nice to draw on paper again. Ive been doing exclusively digital for a while now.
The regalia here is men's fancy. The designs are both ones I saw on regalia that I researched, and some of my own sort of designs that you could see, so they are appropriate.
Its also a nice change to prove to myself that I can draw adult characters. I swear, I am not exclusively a cub artist.
I'd love to hear what you guys think about it.

The sketch is really nice! I'm kinda impressed. I had no idea that the girl scouts used to do that. That being said, as a pow wow singer and someone making regalia right now, I kinda know why they don't do that anymore. Well... some pow wows I've gone to, they'll allow just about anyone, even if they don't know what they're doing. In fact I've been to pow wows where virtually no one is Native. That being said, it's not totally banned in some pow wows, but as you said, you have to respect pow wows that ask only Native people participate. There's a drum group I know where one of the singers is completely of European descent and mostly Irish, but no one gives him any issues. There are a lot of variables. Anyway, not to get onto a long explanation, that's what my experience has been so far.
