Ok… unlike allot of my drawings I am Kinda keeping my random thoughts on this submission as I draw it… by the time I started taking little notes here and there I was adding the finishing touches on the chief and realizing I need to go back in through Riddick and up the badass o-meter.
One of my biggest pet peeves with halo 3 is the fact that the armor looks like cement, not just any cement… but specifically poured highway cement… the kind that has Astroturf rolled over it to give the cement grip. I assume that the Bungie (*cough* Microsoft *cough*) team was going for a “Sand casted” look. In this case I think they missed the mark… Some may like the look, and I am sure there is an artist on the team somewhere who is very proud of his mapping but it’s not my cup of tea. Thus any time I draw the chief I am going to draw him with smoother lines… that way he doesn’t look like he met the wrong end of a cement truck and a roll of Astroturf.
And another point of note… I think the core design for Halo 2’s armor was better in the details then 3, however there are things I DO like about both… so I Kinda mashed the two together to get what I have. I REALLY like the way this is turning out. I did this unusually from what I normaly do. I knew I wanted to have something a touch more realistic feeling then my normal stuff… which has a very cartoony flare. Pushing my limits and all that, and I REALLY like the way this is turning out.
Only thing to finish on the chief now is his tummy… which is gonna be mostly black with a few details here and there. Also… I need a computer that can display more color… when I get to working in the darker tones I loose allot of “In between” colors when I am working near pure black.
Ok chief is done for the moment… now moving onto Riddick’s arm…. I need to add the details to the while thing, including his arm gauntlets >_<. One thing I tried to do with this particular piece is to REALLY convey that a.) Chief is out cold, and B.) Riddick is ready to swing into action at any moment. Chief’s head is supposed to look limp and his arms are limp too. Even in cut scenes when Chief is analyzing things going on around him at ease, he really never is at ease, his arms are slightly bent at the elbow making him always look tense.. The only time we EVER see him completely limp is at the beginning of halo 3. His shoulders are also down, almost slumped. Chief’s head is being completely supported by Riddick’s fist and is also resting on the back edge of his armor. If Riddick would let go at this point, chief’s head would lull forward.
With Riddick his body language speaks volumes; first off, he is staring directly at the viewer he is leaned forward, his brows are drawn, slight cocky smirk. I used a good deal of reference on his face to try and get the expression right. Also his lips are drawn, he knows that if something happens he will most likely loose the upper hand, he is defensive. His hand is also clenched he knows Chief would be a Mean advisary. He is also trying to have fun with it. You don’t find a super Soldier passed out in an allyway every day. “Smile for the camera!”
Back to art. Working on Riddick’s gauntlets. Put the first bit of work into the gauntlets, now working on shadowing the arm… I hate hands… with a passion I hope his hands actually LOOK like hands. Fixed the knuckles… that’s what had been bothing me. Rather sleep deprived at this point. Going to go on and add some more highlights to the arm then go back to Riddick’s face again.
And now I am finished… and super happy with the result… woo

Brill-fucking-iant. Awesome from concept straight through execution. You could probably sell a poster of this to fans of either series if the various trademark holders wouldn't trounce you for trying. There's a little twitchiness with how sharp the shadow is where forearm overlaps bicep, but in light of how awesome the work on the rest of it, particularly the face, is... It's minor nitpicking.
First of all, very nice picture in all sorts of ways. Very nice.
At first I could not figure out wether he was supporting chief, or if he was hugging him. So... something more there perhaps <.<
And I think the reason his armor looked the way it did in H3 is because it was supposed to be more "worn out" at the time. So they added imperfections into the mapping.
And it sort of fits the "SPARTAN" mentality to never be at ease at all. While it did not come through all too well in the games the backstory was supposed to have them quite closely resemble the ancient city.
But back to point, very nice picture.

Given that Bungie is now independent of Mother Microsoft, I'd think that they could really push for better than the limits that their former boss imposed upon their creativity.
Other than that, I must say that this is one of the best fan rendered pieces of Halo art I've Ever seen. Absolutely stunning combo!

Rumors are True
however production was canceled when a good deal between Microsoft and Fox/universal couldn't be met
The warthog he is talking about was made for the commercials leading up to halo 3
the people at Weta are Halo fanboys too XD
look up Neil Bloomcamp I think the dudes name is

:) I could never accept that an unarmed Riddick could beat Master Chief in a fight without getting seriously inured. Still, that's neither here nor there, the drawing looks so professional although it doesn't convey the idea that MC just got his neck snapped, at worst it just feels like he's restraining MC.
did you read the description?
MC is just out cold... he didn't get his neck snapped or anything LOL
More or less (this isn't in the description) Cheif got ripped from his universe into this one... which I am calling "No man's Land" the force of ripping someone from one universe to another leaves the person rather disorented and so chief pretty much appeared in an ally... and promptly passed out.
Riddick found him and at first thought it was a set of discarded armor. ^_^

This is phenomenal work. Really outstanding effort you put in on this, and it's a real pleasure to see how well you kept to the source material. I would say I envy this, but rather I'm just amazed by it, and thoroughly motivated by it.
Five star job, absolutely fantastic art

This is made of Awesome and Win! :) Now if those two some how had some kind of weird clone bastard-love-child type thing, it'd be like a Primarch from Warhammer 40,000. Which would make him/her half way towards being God Emperor of Mankind. And yes, that title should be all the explanation that is needed :P

OK Problems, I have never interacted with any of the Riddick products and I know that Furyans are stronger than humans but how the hell does he (A) Pick up armor that weighs easily more 1000lb and is in a state of (B) Lock down that is achieved when trauma to the suit is great enough to render the user unconscious (that is why when splattered the suit assumes a rigid pose in the game rather than a ragdoll) which would apply anther 3-5 thousand kilograms of resistance to being manipulated, unless he was dead the suit would not drop lockdown and thus would have to be lifted like a very frigging heavy plank. Also the chief is bigger than Riddick who is 6'2(Vin Diesel's measurements) and thus Riddick would have to stand on something in order to achieve a pose like this. But at the same time it is unlikely that the chief's feet are ideally placed to allow him to stand thus introducing a new obstacle to over come, one might be pointed strait down with the other twisted 90 degrees flat.
P.S. I think the Silencer AKA Red Tin Man is much better cyborg than the master chief.
Other than that you did a really good job drawing it.

He isn't picking it up so much as sitting it up because he thinks it's a shell... he is braced against the back to make sure it doesn't fall back over. There was no Trauma to the suit, chief just more or less fell over and passed out due to really extreme vertigo, Riddick wasn't there when that happened. Like I said earlyer, Riddick is braced against the back of the suit, the lower half (legs and butt) are very much still on the ground, and Riddick is bent over, more or less posing with a trophy XD
Cheif has no idea what's happening and is off in lala land XD

Very cool work, it makes me want to see how the story lays out in the end.
I think you were successful in making the Halo look limp. Working with the subject matter, it's the best one could do, without taking liberties. He still looks stiff to me, but I automatically know it's just the armor conveying that, and I know that's closest to reality as one can get when dealing with the physics of it.
Loved reading your thoughts during the process as well!

"You're not afraid of the dark are you?
"After all I've been through that's the last thing on my mind."
"So I guess there aren't any more mercs with death wishes that want a piece of me, they're sending Spartans now?
"We need men who can fight, not for a cause of course, but maybe to expunge their records."
"......... I'm listening."
