Asian small claw otter is my favorite otter actually. I'm much bigger and more anthro and from the Pacific NW so I might be a Northern river otter myself but I love those little small claws. They always seem to hang together in huge packs and they're so small and cute. Like big ferrets really. I hear of all the otters small clawed are probably the most commonly kept domestically.
Small-clawed otters ARE cute as hell, aren't they? I've heard of people having them as pets too. I've actually worked with them. The ones I had were fat and spoiled. They were so hyper they were harder to train than other otters and bit anything that got put into their enclosure. But they weren't intentionally mean, I just think they liked to bite. I loved the way they explore the world with their hands especially. Oh and their messes smelled to high hell. But they were still so comical and playful you couldn't help but love 'em.
BTW I found out recently a group of River Otters is called a "Romp". Funny. A group of Sea Otters is a "Raft", and a group of Ferrets is a "Business". I wonder if that's like a "Funny Business"?
