I see so many folk on FA uploading reindeer pr0n in "honour" of Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/Yule/Solstice/WHATEVER, and I wanted to do something a little nicer, a little more classy. Don't get me wrong, bizare holiday sexx0rz has it's place...but for my Yule picture I wanted to do some REAL honouring. Ergo, here we have Inga (Sighthoundlady's character) and the gallowspony silently admiring a carving on the crumbling remains of a standing stone. The carving is of Odin, astride Sleipnir.
Major experimentation here...lighting effects, tiny skinny lines (which I may or may not EVER USE AGAIN as they are a total pain in the arse!), et cetera. I like the overall effect.
Sadly most of the fine details were lost when I resized the image...the original size was over 5,000 pixels. Too big...I found it so huge some of the brushes (regular standard PS brushes, that is!) did not work properly. Lesson learned...canvase size of HUGE isn't a good idea.
All in all though, all the effort and stress is worth it. I'm very, very proud of this.

I've been trying to sketch out Sleipnir's anatomy for a while now, for a collab of Odin on Sleipnir...been struggling with it, actually. :P
And thankyee. :) People so oft forget the ORIGINAL holiday, so I like to remind folk of what we celebrated before the Christian son-god was born. :P

People forget that this used to be a wholly pagan/heathen holiday. Fuck sakes, Jesus (as near archaeologists can figure it) was born sometime in freaking AUGUST. They only celebrate it in winter these days due to old conversion schemes to stamp out the Northern and Pagan traditions. :P Sad, really.
I find it horribly ironic that so many hardcore Christians have "Christmas" trees up, and decorate with holly and evergreens and mistletoe. XD!!!! So very, very ironic.

There have been a couple of people who have said July and just recently there was a scientist (not sure exactly on what his title was, so forgive me) who said it was late June the last time a very bright star would have been created around 2 or 3 BC when Jesus was born. But, when conquering a people, when in Rome, do as the Romans.
I find it awesome as SHIT that when missionaries tried to convince the Nordic people to convert and told them of Jesus and how he was so powerful he could come back from the dead, the Norse thought this was wonderful, but instead of converting wholly, they just adopted Jesus as one of their deities and added in the Old Gods to the churches. I want to go some day and see them.

Thanks! And I agree. I mean, I'm not gonna judge if people want to draw Reindeer gangbanging each other, but...I dunno, seems not enough people have any respect for the holiday season any more. Porn is fine and can be fun as hell to draw but...it shouldn't be the ONLY kind of themed pic out there. :P
I keep forgetting you're an Odinist, as it were. Personally, I'm a little creeped out by "holiday porn" as it gets called and I think honouring anything with porn is a bit of a confused thought at the best of times.
This, though, is nice. I so very rarely see good pagan artwork with some real feeling behind it so it was very refreshing to see this so close to Yule. At least there's no fantasy faeries or pixies or any of that nonesense cluttering up the place and making it look tacky. Oh, if only people who collected images and figurines of them knew what the Little People were really like!

Some holiday porn seems okay...tasteless, sure, but then again what furry porn ISN'T? XD Tasteless, gratuitous porn can be fun!
But it shouldn't be the only way to express or honour the season. ;)

Neither do I, which seems wierd to me. :P

I don't know that I've ever drawn any faeries or pixies. There is a probable reason for this. *creepy!!!*

So many Pagans use Paganism as an excuse to do really crass things, speaking from what I've seen of the community in my area. I think really it's because most Pagans (Dogsoul and a few others aside, mind you) are lazy and don't hold a reverence they should for holidays. However, that's my two cents. *kicks soapbox*
Well I think that's down to the dross that most people are taken to at a young age when discovering Paganism. A lot thing that the 'wiccan' publications of individuals such as Raven Silverwolf (or whatever it is she's called) are actually fictional bollocks. They take it to heart, have children and teach their children without ever stopping to think for themselves. It makes me quite cross when I see American shows depicting 'Pagans' when actually they're depicting misguided fools that have found a glittery, or gloomy, way of life that suits their lazy ideal.
Hmm... sometimes I forget how strongly I feel about misrepresentation of all this. Paganism is a very simple religion, it doesn't need all the trappings and trimmings of most other faiths and it has a healthy amount of Common Sense. Some people don't see that, but others, as shown in the picture above, thankfully do!

THANK YOU. Finally someone who agrees with me! I've spent YEARS trying to tell people that you don't need whistles and bells to make your magic work. If you think it with purpose, it is done. If you raise a glass to the Gods on holidays, bully. One doesn't NEED ritual. One WANTS ritual. But that's getting off on another tangent.
Am I right to assume you are outside of the US?
Am I right to assume you are outside of the US?
If I'd bothered to look at your profile, you're in the UK. I've honestly wanted the opinion of someone outside of the US on what they think of our "pagan culture" here. I imagine things would be much different elsewhere. I'll spare my comments further than what I already have.
Pagan culture in the US and the UK are much the same. The televised version is always high Wiccan bullshit with no ties to any deeper meaning than the advancement of self through glitter and coloured candles. However, there are quite a few groups in both countries that actually bother to do a little research, to ask questions and to follow their gut instincts.
As far as I'm concerned, Paganism should be a personal religion. I've never met two Pagans that have exactly the same approach and the same is true of people from other religions (though that would digressing). Essentially, one can have the high ritual but the intent, as you quite rightly point out, is far more important. I have a mixed approach to the whole affair but, fundamentally, prefer to work alone for most things with the exception of the major festivals (like Yule tomorrow, wheee!).

I love you. Have my children. Seriously.
It it not, as you've said, that I don't participate in group rituals and festivals and whatnot, but I do prefer to carve my own path and, unlike so many in the communities I've been part of, do not expect my religion to be spoon fed to me. I like to take something, chew on it for awhile, savour the flavour and then make a decision as to what I like, do not like and the like. I don't want someone telling me what I should and should not believe. If I wanted that, I would have stayed seated in the pews.
To play Devil's Advocate for a moment, however, I do believe that it is not just a Pagan issue with people not thinking past the ends of their noses, so to speak. How many Christians do not bother to learn their religion and then beat people over the head with things they know nothing about?
I'm starting to believe it's a human condition, sadly. Thankfully I have found, through association and not, people who think and reason and discuss and debate while still remaining open minded. They are some of my closest friends.

That is probably the truest statement of modern paganism AND the most flattering compliment I have gotten all year. Thank you, it makes me very, very happy. XD

It's why I wince when I call myself "pagan"...because most pagans I know? I wouldn't want to be associated with, LOL!!! Then again, I think part of it is that so many pagans are merely using old gods as a tool to rebel against Christianity while simoutaneously aping the christian religion's rigidity and inflexibility (woooo! how redundant can I GET?! XD!!!).
But most laypersons can't tell the difference between a good pagan and a bad pagan, same as how many pagans can't tell a good christian from a bad one. So very ironic.

Wow. Singing my song, my friend. Singing my song. If there's something I cannot understand is people who claim to be outside Christianity and all it's "EBOLSZOMG", but then apply JudeoIslamicChristian mindsets to Paganism. It drives me crazy.
And these same people persecute me for being "EVIL" when there IS no such THING as evil as Pagans should understand it. *shakes head* It's just so disheartening. It's why I've gone from running Pagan Pride Days and hosting pagan festivals and being a public speaker to sitting on my thumbs.

Oh…my…goodness, Kyle. This is just beyond words. I’m beyond words of gratitude for how lovely you made this. I love the sentiment and reverence behind this, it’s both humbling and uplifting.
Technically I think this maybe one of your best pieces I have ever seen. The thin lines may have been a pain but the effect is breathtaking. This has a very painted with real media look about it. The horses just seem so at peace and restful at the same time, bracing with each other against the cold. The rock with it’s petroglyph of Odin and Sleipnir is so well done and the candles are just perfect. Thank you so much for including Inga in this image, she looks gorgeous, the coloring on both the horses is so smooth and gorgeous, their colors are perfect.
Also wanted to say, that if you upload this to DA, you could use a much larger version so we could see all those magnificent details. I know from the sample you sent me yesterday how very detailed you made this.
Than you so much for this, Kyle. I just want to stare at this all day.

Ooooo, I might upload the mostly-unresized (at 100% resolution, you end up not able to see much of anything...I hit "fullsize" once while working on it and it zoomed in on Inga's butt, and the image is so huge not a single line from the lineart was visible, LOL!!!) version soon, except I think I'll watermark it...DA seems to have more issues with unpunished art theft than FA. ;)
And I'm so very glad you like it. :D It was a pain in the hindside but I ultimately enjoyed making it. :) And Inga is very, very fun to draw! :D

Does this mean you won't be cross with me if I tell you that the paper the pic I'm doing for you is looking shoddy and I have been considering scanning and finishing it digitally, provided I use this same style? :D
'Cause, uhm...one can only erase something so many times before the paper dies a horrible, perma-smudged death. *hides*

Thanks! :D And I think I will...as someone else pointed out, there's precious little good pagan art out there...and this was, for all the nuisances of working with ungodly huge filesized and teeny bitty freaking lines, a really good experience and a wonderfully fun challenge. :)
Someone else suggested I do a calendar...I may do just that, with a theme of honouring my own favourite gods and godesses. :D
Thing is I only have like...a few I would want to honour. :P I need'a broaden my horizons, LOL!!!

The story goes that Balder was the best loved of all the gods. His mother was Frigga, goddess of love and beauty, and she loved her son so much that she wanted to make sure no harm would come to him so she went through the world, securing promises from everything that sprang from the four elements--fire, water, air, and earth that they would not harm her son.
Leave it to the deity of chaos. Loki found the loophole in mistletoe. He made an arrow from its wood and, as a prank because he wasn't invited to the party, took the arrow to Hoder, Balder's brother, who was blind and guiding Holder's hand, Loki directed the arrow at Balder's heart, and he fell dead.
Frigga's tears became the mistletoe's white berries. In the end, Balder is restored to life and Frigga is so grateful that she reverses the reputation of the offending plant--making it a symbol of love and promising to bestow a kiss upon anyone who passed under it. People would often throw down their weapons whenever mistletoe was present as a show of good faith and many talks of peace or diplomatic functions were done with Mistletoe present.

It just sucks when she sits there and TELLS ME my religion. "You are SO a Christian!! YOU BELIEVE IN GOD AND JESUS AND YOU WERE BAPTIZED AND CONFIRMED BY THE CHURCH!!!"
Hey, I'm not denying the existance of god! Just make it ploural, mmkay? Also, they have ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE that Jesus did in fact live. The question is not about his existance, but rather his divinity. 8B
Nearly getting into an "am not" "are too" argument with my aunt should illustrate her maturity level about all this, though. :P

It's very much like my mother who refuses to talk religion. I generally just let her live in denial because it's easier for her. *shrugs*
"Do you believe in God?"
"Yup. Sure do." Just don't worship him.
"Oh. Okay, then."
But we both still know what's been said underneath it all. It's a little ridiculous. These people who profess to love us can't love us enough to let us have a mind of our own. Really love should come with a disclaimer. "I love you inside this box. Step outside of it and I reduce myself to the moronic thought that allowed me to get sucked into this religion in the first place".
OH GODS KYLE NOT DIFFERENT!!! AAAAAHHHH! *cough*

Holy crap...i'm afraid to add to your comment load o.o
*grins* almost.
Well i have to agree that those two horses are the best thing i think i've ever seen you do, they are SO detailed and lifelike, i really do expect this picture to move. The soft lighting with the intricate details such as the mane/tails and the blinder (i really hope its called that, i don't know much of the terminology), is genius and it really adds a "master" touch to the artistry of this all.
Gorgeous piece, sweety!

You've been flooded by comments already, but here, have another one! :D
*speechless*
This... is absolutely gorgeous. The atmosphere is amazing, the lighting, all the details. So much love. The candles! The carving! So beautiful.
Love the grain filter too, it really adds to the whole image :)
Also, randomly, woo for Norse mythology. I don't believe in any gods or anything, but I lovelove Norse mythology, always have. I saw this giant book box with EVERYTHING, but it was ridiculously expensive, so I passed it by. It was tempting, though!

One more comment to the fold. Everyone has already said everything that I would have said, but this really is amazing and I wanted to add my thoughts to the fold. *points above* I spammed all over everything.
I must say your devotion to the Old Gods is truly impressive and your honour through your art is quite evident. I am sure any deities of creativity would be quite pleased.
There is more emotion than I can convey in simple words, so I will leave it at that.

You know, I had a fjord-ish character a while back, she had the two-toned mane and everything. I couldn't call her a full fjord though as she was supposed to be a mutt pony bred over the post-zombie apocalypse years to carry around the last surviving humans since getting gasoline or oil was near impossible XP I should draw her again....CURSE YOU INFECTIOUS FJORDS!!!!!
Wonderfully done!
I think you did a really nice job with the lighting, even if it was a stretch and experiment (can't learn if you don't try!). I know allowing areas to be really dark and grey (in tone as well as color) can be hard to do as most of us are used to rendering things in "daylight."
It's also interesting to see the bit of difference between their two body types even though they are of similar breeds (I think Inga is at least part Fjord).
My only thing to note is that it looks like Gallow's right foreleg is stepping under and across Inga's hind legs, or maybe it's that Inga's right hind is stepping under and across herself? It's just a small spot, but it creates some visual confusion.

You're welcome. The fact that one of his legs is mostly hidden (I do see that little sliver of cannon!) isn't an issue, at least for me, but that their feet all appear on the same line is a bit odd. Granted, with as much time as you probably spent on everything else in this piece I'm not terribly surprised it went unnoticed. Keep up the good work just the same!
If you want to use realistic brushes digitally I'd recommend ditching Photoshop and buying Corel Painter X. I know in Photoshop you can create your own brushes but in Painter it's *much* more customizable. http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pi.....fr/painter.htm
Also, when you significantly resized this did it lower the quality that much... hence the grainy texture? Or is that intentional?

My bad. Thought you had money cuz of the replacing flooring comment lol.
It's certainly a program to invest in!!! You might be able to find it cheaper on EBay. Or if you know someone who's a student and can buy the $50 version for you on journeyed or a similar site, then you reimburse them.
But for now if using Photoshop is your forte I have nothing against it, you've apparently learned to master the brushes.

...yeah apparently you missed the "if I had room and a horse" part. e.e I rent a very small apartment and am basically all but broke. e.e Bills, pets, legal fees, gas for my car and food for my belleh...very little cash left over.
Hell, I didn't even pay to get Photoshop, a friend installed their copy on my ancient prehistoric tabletop which weighs more than my dog AND both cats COMBINED it's so old. :P
I R POOR.
I cannot afford to spend $50 on anything right now.
I'll stick to Photoshop, thanks. :P

I still have 2 copies available from mine, if you lived closer I'd gladly install it onto your computer, granted you have a mac.
Btw, I know how it is... I was jobless all semester taking loans from the rents (I felt like a total moocher even though it was just for rent & food), just recently got a job in my field thank god, though it doesn't start for another week! I only could afford Painter because I used some Bday money to buy the cheapo student version. I guess one day I'll be able to buy the full version. (Note that the student version is exactly like the full version... all the same effects, brushes, papers etc. Only difference is licensing restrictions).

The bay. Unlike the black one that looks brighter in the eye and almost smiling she is weary in the eye and long in the mouth. Maybe I'm reading more into it than there is but it's a comforting picture. I have to agree that stuff like this can be better than the in-your-face bump and grind. Thank you for sharing.
That's funny, because I thought her eye was a kind eye not a sad one, and I wanted to give her a serious, contemplative look, not "long in the mouth." Really, not the effect I was going for...quiet contemplation and comfort of friendship on a cold Yule night, nothing....sad.
Hi there! -I have to say, you achieved to make something very --hm, spiritual, and very sensitive; in a way it goes to the heart. It is calm and unflashy, yet full of emotion. Thats the way it has to be (for me).
Is there meant some symboslism about the two horses, concerning Loki (as a mare) and the giants stallionhorse breeding Sleipnir?
These soft hidden announcements can be more erotic than sloppy porn, in my eyes.
Thanks!
Are you german or scandinavian, may I ask (I am german), not that it would really matter, just out of interest...

Thanks! :D I worked very hard on this and am very proud of the results, heh! Nope, no refference to Loki though, I do not and will not worship him, though I will admit he did a good thing in birthing Sleipnir. :) This is more of a reflection on Odin, actually.
I am not German or Scandinavian, born and bred here in the U.S.A.. :) Though I have friends in Germany and I dearly wish to visit the country someday.

The horse in the foreground (Inga) is a Fjord cross, the gelding in the background is a Fjordling with inappropriate white. :) Both are basically the same, breed-wise, for all intents and purposes. And yes, that greyish-silver grulla IS a real Fjord-colour, it just isn't as common. However I do concede that the white blaze and stocking are wrong. :P
ah, cool! Fjords are one of my fav's when it comes to horses, you did a really good job on 'em, and the uncommon color is probably why I didnt put the gelding as one in my head also. And even with the wrong stocking and blaze (which I dont mind at all, I think its cute) toyou did a fantastic job on this piece
Thanks! :D The gallowspony is the same basic colour as the horse closest to the cameraman in this image: http://www.horse-genetics.com/image.....ur-line-up.jpg
