THE END
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
With operation-not-operation Hedgehog over, the only thing between us and the end of our service was setting things ready for the next batch of conscripts, cleaning up and packing up our equipment and then it’s….done.
A couple more speeches, some more furious cleaning of the floors and some more yelling because nobody told the conscripts not to stick their flak jackets in a washing machine and then we walked out once and for all.
Well, until the next Hedgehog-style military exercise wants my services again. But that won’t be a 11 month affair anymore.
…This would typically be a place to write a footnote for the whole experience. Some farewell words to cap off the service. Welll….Proponents of military service always like to declare how going through will make you a MAN, with DISCIPLINE and WORK ETHIC (all-capitals required). Well, if anything, I feel like less of a man.
This also concludes this sketch-diary. So I hope yo found this glimpse into what I spent the previous year doing interesting. Or at least didn’t feel annoyed by the spam.

It's not even the being a TRUE MAN part, it's just the....kind of like when I see folk discussing artists and the "get a REAL job" line of thought comes up. What is this REAL job they speak of? Do even they themselves have an idea? "It'll make thee a MAN" is just such a nebulous catch-all term to throw around, more slogan than anything.
Ah, but will the skills transfer to operating a different rifle? ...that said, I guess if you know one Kalashnikov clone, you know 75% of all rifles in existence.

It gnaws at one's self-worth. It was not a place to feel useful or valued. Admittedly, other things were contributing to that - concerns about education and post-service employment (or lack of such) were constantly gnawing at me, a persistent reminder that I was gaining little while others around me bound ahead in life.
Really, the core of that statement lies in ridiculing the "it'll make thee a MAN" line of thought. Such a strange slgan.
