What I have figured out so far, is that he is a guardian of deer. In his mortal life, he chased a large number of them off a cliff for fun. Because he's an asshole. But he ended up plummeting to his death when he lost his footing. Rather than letting him go to the next life, the forest god made him be a guardian for the deer to make up for it. He's since grown more mature, and even though he's been giving the opportunity to go to the afterlife, he chooses to stay behind and continue on.
