The is the area called Perforai, it's right around 39°, -77°
it's during the fourth period, world population approx 1 person/30 km sq, so he meets hardly anyone during this period.
Writing on the back of the photo (transliterated):
I ask about the shrine like structure, he assumes it's a grave but hopes it's a marker or a sign of a nearby village or commune. We found an empty settlement up the road but the inhabitants had gone maybe twenty or so years before.

NERDERY ALERT:
the periods are divided based on population and general activity of society, not by calendar years because they're irrelevant
1 - chaos
this period is divided into 5 eras that i'll just summarize
there's apprx 3 billion people and still tons of burning cities and gassers and warlords. wanderer was born in this period in eastern europe (near today's romania). it's approx 100 years after the 'apocalypse' (which was a GM disease that divided the world into quarantined zones and eventually started a small but devastating war where russia bombed china, and america retaliated and bombed russia, creating the 'Rotiolanz'.) During this, the satellite 'Atelier' malfunctions, constantly bombarding earth with EMPS that make electronic technology useless. The GM disease never leaves earth and the population tapers from this point on.
The photographer's legacy forms, and they study the process of photography and hand it down through the generations to come.
2 - factions
there's apprx 500 million people and distinct factions and groups have formed. Still lots of wars but hardcore bandits and gassers are going by the wayside, though they still exist. during this period the wanderer leaves the european continent (called averik) and ends up in south america (sothlan) and is trapped on this continent until 'the long years' simply due to an eventual lack of boating knowledge in the world.
3 - dwindling
there's apprx 100 million people and banditry becomes more popular among those left, as there's not enough people to form coherent towns and societies. Small groups of wanderers are more prevalent than settlements.
4 - nature, again
there's apprx 20 million people left, most of the world is overgrown vegetation.
5 - solitary
there's apprx 250,000 people left. the wanderer meets almost no one, and during this period the photographer's legacy has evolved into a cult that does not interact with him, they follow from a distance. The Atelier finally stops working, but most electronic technology is long gone.
6 - the long years
there's apprx 5000 people, many of whom still follow the wanderer (perhaps 50 or 60). this is the longest period. No signs of civilization remain except for some bronze and heavy metal statues. The remaining people are groups of families that have a strong resistance to the GM disease, though it's still fatal to most newborns. He managed to cross back into averik during this period when a land bridge forms between n america, icealnd, england, europe. the wanderer will intermittently sleep for years and years during this period. (this is where the story starts to go from sci-fi to fairly surreal)
7 - the final photo
it's been several million years, the tectonic plates have stopped moving, causing the ecology of earth to stall and die off resulting in oxygen depletion. two people remain, the wanderer and the final photographer. he takes a photo of the wanderer sitting at the tree of tenere.
so these are fleshed out way more with maps and timelines, but this is the general gist of it
i'll post that other stuff later on i guess :3

You don't need to worry. Nerdity is awesome.
Thanks for writing this all up. It sounds pretty cool. It really plays off on my post-apoc fantasies.
So are you just gonna draw scenes from this in a non-linear way from time to time or do you plan for a more completed comic series of this because it sounds pretty awesome.

i never really had plans for doing a completed story or comic for the wanderer, i like the idea of fragmented parts scattered around the internet and occasionally in Small Stories, i think it compliments the concepts i want to address in this series. i think i'm just gonna do like i have been with non-linear scenes. the last few pics have focused on the 4th period, but i want to go back and do some more from the first and second period like i was doing a few years ago. i get to draw more guns and technology and people in those settings. :3
I had never thought of it that way but it is cool to have a general eric storyline and then tell portions of it in a scattered manner. Very surreal.
Yeah, seeing society collapse in fiction is always kind of cool. Waterworld, mad max, the postman, all of them guilty pleasures. Just make sure to still some surreal scenes with alien type monoliths. ^^

cool! heh yeh the wanderer is a lonely guy
well not always, he lives forever and there's different eras
sometimes the photographer's legacy interacts with him (that's the family/cult the follows him and takes the pictures)
but during other periods they only followed him from a distance.

thank you!
the wanderer is a character i've drawn for some time
basically the wanderer, who inexplicably lives forever (along with a few others who he never meets) meanders the earth in a post apocalyptic setting. The Photographer's Legacy is a cult/generational family (depending on the era) that follows him and takes photos of him.
the setting is an excuse for me to explore the ideas of forgotten history, knowledge, and events, as well as the inherent transience of existence and perception.

I think that these minimalist colour palettes are best when you think you can see more colours than there actually are, and this picture definitely fooled me in that way at first. =o Despite the gloomy undertones, there’s a serene, slightly melancholy springtime feel about this. Your colour choices are magical.
THIS IS TOO SIMPLE, AND THERE ARE NO FUCKING FURS UH... FUCKING IN IT...
we want more RODS and less ROADS
((pssst pssst... come here i have to tell you a secret:
You should keep drawing and drawing wanderer things...
i love the atmosphere of the wanderer, the nostalgic and loneliness of its lines, the simplicity of the colours and the sadness of the whole scene...
just don't tell anyone, or people may think i do have a little heart))
