It was the first comic I ever bought (technically Iron Man Annual #15 was a gift, so... yeah) And it blew my little 12 year old mind!
Takes place right after Tony Stark returns from being clinically dead for the past year- and while he's turned the tables on the techno-organic virus that had been eating his nervous system alive, (by manually reprogramming it into an artificial nervous system while his body was frozen) the ordeal still left his body paralyzed. With time, he'll make a full recovery, but Tony prefers to keep busy. Enter the Remote Armor. By wiring his new artificial nervous system into a telepresence headset, Stark wired a cybernetic link to his new armor. Thus allowing Iron Man to fight evil while still bedridden. It had a weekness, however, in that damage taken by the Remote Armor was transmitted back as neural-feedback, so there was a real fear of Tony getting his brain fried. (i think this is the first time he'd literally wired the base of his skull into a control system)
As for the issue itself:
The Controller is the first vilian to get the drop on Stark, since his apparent un-dead-ening (shush). While Ironman was preoccupied with battle, Stark's doctors, (characters who HAVE been introduced and developed in earlier issues) barge into his room, shoot him up full of sedative and kidnap him.
I had to look it up, but The Controller used to be a Hulk-like villan, who attatched control-disks to his victims, and used their 'mental energy' to power his armor, and buff himself out. (Dom issues, anyone?) HOWEVER, what Stark woke to was a much more intelligent version of this villain. The Controller was manipulating a complex full of hundreds of people under direct mind-control, including Stark's former medical staff. On top of that, were these heavily armed 7ft tall cyborgs, that looked like Deathlok on steroids! (i wish they'd gone into more detail on the cyborgs. They must have been human at some point, right?) If you think about it- the Controller was very much a dark-mirror version of Stark, at this point in time. But i digress-
The Controller wastes no time injecting Stark with a control chip. But, thanks to the virus that almost killed him, Tony's mind is harder take over- so he enters this Tron-like virtual world, were the Controller is a giant spider-legged face, trying to hack his mind. Stark, of course, uses this situation to back-hack, and control one of the slaves, using them to hook up his interface, and connect to the Iron Man armor.
So that's where this pict comes in- Tony Stark, locked in a battle on two fronts. On one side, Stark is desperately trying to block the Controller from infiltrating his mind, in cyberspace- meanwhile, Ironman crashed down in the middle of a dozen hulking cyborgs! As the Cyborgs charge at him, they shout, 'You cannot defeat us! You are but one man, while we- are Legion!' Ironman takes a step back... and machineguns and grenade launchers and energy cannons fold out of his arms and shoulders!! 'Oh, I think you'll find I'm full of surprises.' (Little Janus' mind blown, right here)
But, just as it looks like Shellhead has the upper hand, the Controller breaks thru Stark's last firewall, the giant Andross-sized head plunges it's tongue right into Tony's virtual skull! So what does he do? Stark GRABS that tongue and shouts: 'You want what's in my mind? Fine! Take it! The shrapnel in my heart? Being shot in the spine? The Techno-organic virus ravaging my body? Everything I've ever been through- I'm gonna take it ALL, and SHOVE IT DOWN YOUR STINKING THROAT!!!' XO
Every freaking circuit in the Controller's base just Explodes! All the mind controlled people stop dead in their tracks, and fall over. His cyborg enforcers shut down like ragdolls. A system designed to enslave thousands of people, FRIED by the will of a single man! (Little Janus' mind DOUBLE blown here!!)
In the epilogue Iron Man confront's the Controller, only to find that the dashing vilian, surrounded scantily clad women, was, himself, another puppet. The man behind the curtain (steel plated curtain), the real Controller was this withered husk of a man (very Davros looking), barely able to move, spitting on himself as he tries to laugh in Ironman's face, a victim of his own steroid-like technology. Turns out, The Controller thought that whatever medical tech brought Stark back from the dead, could be used to repair his own broken body. Turning away in digust, Shellhead just picked 'himself' up and left- leaving The Controller to rot in his own broken-down tower.
Anyoo, figured I'd see what you guys thought of this before I attempt inking. *sigh* I miss Kevin Hopgood's mech designs so much...
