A fan made ship design for my upcoming comic ^^ I have a sketch of it in my gallery along with other MC ship designs.
Maximilian Class: The work horse of the U.N. fleet, the Maximilian is a front line battle cruiser that delivers heavy fire power with a mix of durability and reliability. The Maximilian's Bow firing Heavy particle cannons are capable of delivering devastating damage to enemy craft, and combined with it's ability to launch reaction warheads, makes the Maximilian a force to be reckoned with.
While working on the comic, I got to thinking, why not combine traditional 2D drawings and 3D renders for the comic? as I said its a thought but If I do decide to go ahead with it, most likely all character art would be 2D while depictions of space battles or outer space scenes would use 3D renders, I will have to try it out and see how it looks. ^^

Category All / All
Species Unspecified / Any
Size 1280 x 1024px
File Size 111 kB
Dimensions: about 600 meters in length ( approximately 25 decks)
Mass: standard operational displacement is roughly 10,000 tons
Armaments: Heavy converging beam cannons X4, medium energy cannons X12, reaction missile salvos X10 (5 on starboard, 5 on port)
many X anti air/anti ship cannons / missile launchers
Crew complement: 500 officers/crew, 1000 marines for on board defense, 150 pilots/ total 1650 personnel
Additional craft: X20 VF-11-B thunderbolt Variable fighters, X2 VF-22 Shenvogel special operations variable fighters, maximum craft 22 fighters(stored in port and starboard hangers)
The maximillian is a front line warship that relies on it's heavy ordinace weaponry for going toe to toe with other cruisers, but is vulnerable to enemy fighter attack, therefore it works better in carrier groups that can provide a airwing for defense.
hope that helps

Grat work you are doing there :)
Can't wait to see the final pages of your comic ^^
Regarding your thoughts of combining 3D and 2d ... it is difficult.
In some older animes (Submarine No 6) you see that you should not combine them in the same Screen so either 90% 3D CG or 90% hand drawn :). I have to admit i am not sure if this rule also can be applied on a comic but i would say that depends strongly on your 2D art. If you actually can and want to go with a very "realisitic" look maybe ... if not i would not do it o..o .

That looks pretty sweet. And I've seen 3D and 2D melded together decently when done right. The trick to it from what I've seen is making the materials have a very similar style compared to the 2D. I suggest you restrict the 3D to just the vehicles if you do mix them. That or just the large space craft.
I want to be able to do something like this. My ideas for ships are stuck and I can't never express them well when I try with 3D. Guess I need more experiance than moving blocks :P
I think the idea for the ships is a good one. Saves you repeat drawings since posing them is all you need and giving them the right lighting. Although effects might be harder to get to blend in.
But I think the idea is deffinitly a great option.
