It's like she fell in love with him pretending to be a human (as kitsune are known to do) but when he found out instead of abhorring her he loved her just the same. :3

That's one of the older Kitsune legends, involving a non-malicious fox who happily married a farmer but she was exposed by the family dog. He begged her to come back to him and she did so every night. It feels very like the prototype for the legendary parentage of Abe no Seimei, whose mother was also a benevolent fox but she was exposed by the shadows of her tails on a screen.

One of my favorite Kitsune stories since they usually focus on the fox spirits being trickstery if not downright cruel. Always thought that one was sweet. c:
