Oh my god, cockroaches are the best! I saw one at work last summer... *shifty eyes*

Yeah, are, in a way.

Although they're a bit.. "Ick" in my POV. They must make great pets, excuse the noob question, but are they friendly? xD

Hissers are easy to handle, slow (as in they tend to more... crawl along alowly than run everywhere), they can't fly and have a good temperament. So yeah, I'd say they are. They don't really DO much, but they're interesting pets to keep and quite the conversation starter XD And I used to be terrified of bugs before acquiring these guys :) So they're great for anyone who wants to get over that kinda fear, too. They DO hiss, but very rarely, and its just air being pushed through holes in their back (I think). I've had mine for 2 months or so and they only hissed once, one at the other.

If I had one hiss at me I think i'd be tempted to hiss back. Like "Yea! D:< That's right!" Once you get over the fear factor and fear of being bitten, I bet they'd be fun to hold and scare other people with. "LOOK MOM! IT'S ROACHY! :3!"

They don't bite either, and just eat vegetables and dead leaf matter :3 And YES, they are >3

All hissers are brown/orange :3 Though my camera enhanced it. AND PROBABLY CARROTS. They love them XD

I'm not, no D: And wtf, my college says they are, though I know theres different types. But I'm pretty certain these are madagascan hissing cockroaches :/ I also know theres various colour mutations (but only slight). They're also starting to get their horns (only one of the larger ones though).

But I'm not a bug expert, I'm a complete n00b, so excuse me DX

I have hissers ;p Their colors can vary, but not overall shape. Does she hiss at you at all?

In the photo, the one at the top is a hisser, the orange one isn't unless that's a very wide variation. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1615800/ makes me think of these. I don't own orange heads, but Vera does. Drop her a note with the photos.

Bah, whats the difference between them and hissers, then? And no, but I know they hissed a lot when the college first got them, but they're all used to handling. Will they be okay, if they are a different species, being kept with my two smaller hissers?

I googled orange head roaches and they have wings and stuff? I didn't see any of those in with the roaches at college at all, so now I'm just really confused D| If they are orange heads, how long before they obtain their adult look?

Crap, when I checked them today, the smaller of the two large ones was on its back dead ;_; It kept flipping itself over and wiggling about before but I had no idea why, and I'm no experienced with bugs enough to know what happened. It was almost as if its legs were too long for it or something. As for the other (one in the photo), its a LOT darker than in the photo. Its entire body is black, with reddish on the abdomen. Those orange markings are only on the thorax, and the legs are dark brown. I could try take more photos some time D: I feel like such a n00b now.

Erf, I'm sorry to hear he died. Orange heads only get wings in the very last stage, much like my discoids and peppers. They need a higher humidity than Hissers, I believe and will need something to climb, like bark propped against the side of the cage, so they can uncurl their wings. Like I said, I don't own that kind, so no expert. The shape of the head is what told me that the one you were showing isn't a hisser. Young hissers look like miniature adults.

Over time you'll learn more about raising roaches and the kinds. Given they were just lumped in at a college doesn't surprise me they were misidentified. There's a lot of problems with that. I was sold my Discoids and told they were death's heads.

Oh well, it'll be a fun experience, though now I'm paranoid of them flying off or something DX; Thanks for the help and stuff >: I have no idea why he died, probably my fault though, though he kept tipping himself over like that a lot since I got him. I also have no real idea how old the larger one is, so I guess I'll wait and see. It's exciting though, bugs are so fun and interesting :3

The larger species can't fly. they can flail with the wings, about it. It's so funny ;p

And sometimes it happens. Don't beat yourself up over it. I'm pretty good at bug handling and I can't for the life of me figure out why my Hissers keep aborting their egg cases.
