After Captain Freeagle saved America by winning the cold war single-handedly, he retired from public life, or so he thought. During the 60's and 70's, Captain Freeagle became an idolized legend who had this sort of mythology created by the advertising men on Madison Avenue and the directors at Hollyweird. In this example, we see Captain Freeagle cast as the rough and tumble rancher enjoying a Freeagle 100 after a long day at the ranch. These advertisements bolstered the legend and added to the long string of mythology ingrained in public perception.
There is this bizarre disconnect between perception and reality with Captain Freeagle shown as the tough everyday guy, the patriotic soldier, the superhero, the unifier, the bad-ass. He is all these things to the people, but in reality, he is a retired alcoholic and a shadow of his former self with a penchant for getting angry at all the damn kids making noise outside of his apartment on Capitol Hill. Will Captain Freeagle meet the expectations of a fawning public once he returns to public service after terrorists attack? He may need to align himself to the mythology and attempt to be something he is not to meet the demands of a mislead public.
This particular piece was inspired by the Classic Marlboro Man advertising copy which no longer appear in US publications. This is a homage to a time long past.
