The 2015 Ice Furpocalypse
(Photo Gallery)
Our friends who left Dallas early Sunday on the chilly morning of Sunday, February 23...they were the lucky ones! That evening, an icy winter storm blew across North Texas, dumping ice and sleet on roads, bridges, and furries. The highways were icy and treacherous, and over 1,100 flights were cancelled at DFW International Airport and Love Field.
"Oh man, it was great fursuiting weather, but trying to drive back home was a bit challenging, even after waiting a while for the ice on the roads to thaw some. It was fun sliding around on top of the parking lot though.
"The best memory that came from the great ice freeze was the group of gentlemen that were going around scraping ice and snow off people's car windows and mirrors. I can't remember if they were a part of staff or just other fellow stranded con members, but they were such a big help! I would've been stuck there for several more hours if it weren't for them--especially since I was trying to use an old gift card to scrape the layer of ice off my windows." -- Kimaharu
With plenty of warning from the weather service, none of this was a surprise, and our more local attendees were able to head home before the sleet started coming down. Attendees helped each other escape, helping strangers frost their windows, slog luggage in the rain, and get frozen cars ready for the road.
But if your flights were cancelled, or you were a staff member and couldn't escape, you might have been a part of a rare Monday convention day, where Guests of Honor, tired hotel employees, frustrated people with fox tails, and ragged con staff looked at the roads, made sad little faces and drooped their ears, and had another cup of hotel coffee.
It was strange and quiet in that almost-empty hotel, a gathering of friends hiding from the cold, holding onto a few more minutes of that warm con feeling but really wanting to brave the weather and return to their homes. Another day for goodbyes, and a day with plenty of challenges.
"The Ice Furpocalypse of 2015...also known as LOTS of wet dogs! Because I live in the Dallas area, I was fairly close to home and didn't have to worry much about travel. We left the con right after the dance competition in order to avoid the ice.
"What didn't we avoid? Rain. Lots of rain.
"Toting several tons of fursuits and luggage to cars while buckets of water were pouring all over everything would have definitely been a miserable experience, if it hadn't been for two generous con guests wielding umbrellas! While people's paws got a bit of water sloshed on them, the damage could have been a whole lot worse if those two hadn't come along! They saved my fursuit and a huge box of art supplies from what could've been really bad water damage!" -- Silverfang Fluffball
