White needs to play A. That way, if black plays above or below A, white can capture the piece.

Otherwise, black will play the space below A and could eventually form an eye there.

If I played on B black would play below A, forcing me to block him. Black would attach at A. If I tried invading from 1-5, black would play 1-4, forcing me to attach at 1-6 to avoid my stone being captured. So black would end in Sente and make eyes at 1-2.

If I played A black could try to expand on B. I would play 2-7. Black might try pushing 1-7, I'd block off at 1-8, black would have to attach at 1-6 and officially die.
