Human Robots aren't as high tech as you might assume. They don't have true A.I. and aren't self aware. They are typically built and programmed with one particular purpose in mind - but because of their humanoid form and ability to manipulate tools, they can learn to do other jobs.
The difference between visual styles is a matter of generation. THe more square ones are older units that are typically used in engineering, and areas where they may not be seen as often, where as the more rounded robots are more often used in areas where the public will see them.
These aren't their only appearances, and it's not uncommon to see specially designed robots for specific purposes.
