Circa 2009.
I had been working for DC Comics for 10 years when the titles I had been working on were cancelled. I tried to see if there was anything else I could do there.
A humorless assistant editor who had recently been promoted to editor asked me to submit samples for "Looney Tunes" (which was mostly reprints at this time.) I had worked on these comics already, but that didn't seem to matter.
I was probably too miffed for my own good when he sent some sample script pages for me to illustrate (for no money, natch.) I drew both of these pages in less than an hour, and I didn't bother to pull up any model sheets. After I sent them in, the editor chap wouldn't return my phone calls. That's show biz....

First of all, your artwork is amazing.
It gives me shivers just to think you did this in 1 hour.
Your skills and talent are beyond words.
The comic industry is really weird.
I don't understand what they want anymore, and I don't think they do.
When an artist comes with a new fresh idea, they freak out and prefer to be in the 'comfort zone'
When an artist do comic very on model, clean lines and everything in the right place, they freak out too.
I know FA isn't exactly a place you will get much feedback or nice comments, but your work is a real inspiration.
Please keep it up!

I used to consider a career within cartooning or art when I was younger, but I quickly discovered that I was far too slow and far too much of a perfectionist to have any hope of maintaining a professional workrate. It's folks like yourself who can churn this out within an hour that make it, and whom I respect.
But some of your stories show me the other reason why I'd never have cut it in your line of work. The snubs. The beating down of your creativity. I don't think I could take that - I'd find it so stifling and demoralising. I suspect that is all part of having a professional attitude - not taking it personally, just dusting yourself down and moving on to the other half a million things you could be doing.
Am I wrong to sense some element of the disillusionment of experience in your tales of the industry, or are these just the bad days of a career you love?

Your drawing and inking skills have always been first rate Mike. :)
I've never been much of a fan of the 'clean' style but that doesn't mean I don't like it when I see it or appreciate how good someone is who can do it. Shame you couldn't even get a part time inking gig with DC. But then they're morons so what can you do.
